I am absolutely dying for the second version of this mod...

Well yea maybe windmills was a bad example. But some organic table to craft stuff? Or building some "living" organic structure (maybe with insect jelly as a building resource) that acts as a generator to "give life" to bioluminesant lights and smaller stationary insects (turrets) spewing like acid or something at incomming enemies? Well its your call in the end and im still gonna instantly subscribe and greatly appreciate whatever comes in the new version of this mod like with all your other VE mods. I just wish our insectors could live in a proper hive instead of normal buildings :D.
If you even as much as add this mod to your 1.5 save, it will corrupt your save in a few weeks when Insectoids 2 releases. I promise you that.
Perhaps you can have an event before a base is overrun where an nearby allied or neutral faction needs help from the infestation and if you make it in time you can save them but if you forget, it become an "Overrun outpost" as normal. The longer the player lets it sit, the more the infestation grows and spreads. Maybe you can take the VFE - Mechanoids route and have new nest pop up too. This should tie in the "Insect Hive" faction description and "New raid methods".
Just my thoughts. It's been a while so I can't exactly remember what else this mod already did.
There are so many good mods and modders in RimWorld that its not easy to be on all theirs pages and discords etc. So its often easier to just ask on the steam page.
