Overall I'd say it's worth the asking price of 7USD. It's janky in some ways, but the concept is solid and can be really fun with friends. I hope that solo play is also made more approachable, perhaps with a limited respawn mechanic like having 1 or 2 revives that happen automatically since you won't have a teammate to do it for you.

Be wary of playing in public lobbies with randoms and friendly fire enabled - some find it fun to kill their teammates and extract for the full reward while the dead players get a meager fraction. (Not that points are needed to have fun in this game, they just buy cosmetics and situationally useful perks, but it can be a frustrating mechanic.) If you have friends to play with, that'll generally be better than with randoms. I've met some friendly cooperative teammates in public lobbies, but it's a dice toss.

Feels like a direct comparison to Supermarket Simulator, a game I tried out but ultimately didn't gel with. This one I'm keeping though. It just feels better overall, even if it's still expanding with more content over time. Some of the things it does better than SMS in my opinion:

- Co-operative play
- Open and close the store anytime you want
- Better physics for boxes (empty and holding product)
- Hand-pushed carts that can hold boxes for easier restocking
- Easier to price things in bulk on computer instead of label-by-label
- No annoying market-shifts that make you constantly tweak prices every day
- One size of box instead of several, so you can always easily use an empty box to move some product around
- Deliveries actually come on a truck instead of appearing out of thin air
- Self-checkouts!
- Easier access to storage area by default instead of going in and out of the building
- Satisfying weather effects

What SMS does better:
- Modding
- Shoppers telling you which product they wanted to buy but you were out of stock on
- Shoppers still making a purchase if they didn't find part of what they wanted (In GSS they just leave immediately)

Despite how much I respect Metal Gear's story and legacy over its series of games, it's not even why I love this game so much. I mainly just love the gameplay flow. Building your own military base, recruiting new soldiers, getting ferried by your own personal helicopter, sneaking and/or raiding enemy bases to take their stuff and their soldiers... it's so much fun, and you have a ton of options on how to go about it. if you ever get bored of one approach, try switching things up, using tactics or weapons you wouldn't ordinarily use. It's just great. I wish there were more games of this style with open-ended military combat and NPCs supporting you. Closest I can think of is some of the ARMA games and those go way hard into the difficulty and learning curves for me to get into them.

I also highly recommend Infinite Heaven mod for this game, as it lets you tweak a lot of the game's settings to suit your desires.

If only Metal Gear Online had co-op missions instead of purely PvP ones...

EDIT: Figured out the ConnectionTimeout thing. If you try to join a game, it hangs, and you click cancel, it keeps trying to connect in the background. After about 2 minutes it pops up the ConnectionTimeout error and returns you to the main lobby... even if you were ingame playing alone.

So the key is, either wait for that ConnectTimeout screen... or if you can tell it's not gonna connect, just close the game and reopen it.

Hopefully that's fixed soon.

---------------

Original Review:

Tentative thumbs up. The game itself is fun - kinda like a very lite version of Payday with goofy physics and a fun bag-mechanic.

My primary gripe was connection issues... even when you're the one hosting.
Even when I had it set to private lobby and was in-game playing by myself, the game sometimes for no apparent reason kicks me to the main menu with a "connection timeout" error. This makes zero sense, and it ruins any fun I'm having because it means I lost all the efforts of the past 10-15 minutes or so. And the fact that it can happen at the drop of a hat makes me not want to play it in the first place.
Joining isn't much better, as it usually just goes to a "Joining game..." screen that does nothing until you click cancel. Then again, maybe that's simply due to how few players it has at any given time.

Simple but well designed. The gameplay loop of hunting for scrap while fleeing from / shovel-whacking hostile abominations in a co-op setting is excellent. And the voice effects are perfect - they use distance, effects for underwater/being strangled, radio effects, the whole works.

It's addictingly fun.

Played for a free weekend event, going through the first campaign. My overall opinion is mixed, but since that isn't an option, I'll just say a tentative thumbs up for a decent sale price for what's inside.

It has a very similar feel and gameplay style to L4D. As someone who plays a ton of L4D, I think this game is doing an okay job at using the formula, though ultimately I feel it hasn't really added enough of its own uniqueness to keep me coming back after the free weekend.

The style is pretty cool, I'll give it that. Pinging items is a nice feature that I wished the older horde games had. And getting perks along the way was neat. I also highly approve of the embracing of mods.

The guns and powerups didn't really do anything interesting for me though. And the characters aren't bad, but they're not very memorable either.

I might come back to check this out in the future, but for now, it honestly doesn't scratch any particular itch that can't be scratched by L4D already and its wide expanse of custom content. Who knows - give this one time and maybe it'll blossom with content the same way. I'd certainly be happy to see it.

It's pretty much exactly what you think it is - Half Life 2, in VR, with the expected motion controls.

It's quite well done, too. Tutorial messages appear to tell you how to do things as they come up, like opening doors, picking up objects from a distance, toggling your flashlight, and so on. Ladder climbing can be done with your hands as expected, though it's also an optional setting if you don't like it.

Guns are handled how you expect them to in VR. The ammo counts are on the side of the gun, you eject clips and insert them manually, et cetera. Bigger guns like the SMG can be held with both hands (and you should, as it has crazy recoil otherwise). If you don't like aiming down ironsights, lasers are available to toggle on.

It's not entirely without flaw. The handling of ammo is a bit quirky - when you grab it, the ammo disappears in the familiar Half-Life beep of an item pickup, rather than putting it over your shoulder like in Alyx. This results in some weird feelings when reloading a not-empty gun. The clip ejects, you catch it with your off hand (since that puts the unfired bullets in your total ammo pool) but it vanishes as a regular pickup instead of your instinct to put it over your shoulder. It takes some getting used to. There's also the occasional area where you can get stuck, but since Half-LIfe autosaves frequently it isn't a big problem.

Overall this is quite fun and I'm looking forward to continuing the journey through this game in a brand new way.

(I also am hopeful the VR improvements here will be able to be carried in to custom maps... You'd never run out of cool content to play if that becomes possible. It might already be, if you load custom maps using vanilla content. Fingers crossed.)

Overall positive, with cool things and good ideas also accompanied by a near-equal amount of bad decisions, bugs, and non-engaging choices of storytelling. I almost lost the interest to complete the last few chapters as it had nothing interesting going on (except for the Kidman section which was surprising and kinda fun). Feels like it needed less movie writing and more gameplay focus.

I finished the game, but I don't think I'll ever come back for another replay. Nothing worth coming back for.

At first glance, the game seems like a homage at best, a ripoff at worst in regards to what it borrows. The gameplay style is VERY resident evil, as are its enemies. Some of them harken to Silent Hill, or even Dark Souls. Some of these things feel like references while others feel like outright copies.

And yet, besides this initial impression, the game is fantastic.

It's worth noting the price and length - at the time of this review, the game is $5 USD, and the campaign blind takes about 2 hours to complete. Fairly short, but considering the price it's reasonable. But once you do beat the campaign there's additional content unlocked to explore, and without spoiling what it is I will say I find it worthwhile. Especially considering one of them is something I feel the actual Resident Evil games sorely lack (and amusingly the other is something they DON'T lack, hah).

So what is there to like about this game?
- Gameplay feels good. Guns are satisfying to use, reloads feel proper RE style in satisfaction level. The knife you start with is awful (hence why there's an achievement for beating the game with only knife, if you hate yourself) but you get your first gun immediately afterwards and you can later get another melee that feels considerably better to use.
- Enemies are understandable, beatable, and varied to keep things interesting.
- Exploring is pleasant, with a map to help you that keeps track of important details about where locked doors were, what key they need, and where certain puzzles are so you can find your way around smoothly.
- Very quick save room mechanic so you can get back to the game fast if an encounter manages to off you. But save often!
Finishing the game unlocks more to do if you still want more of the gameplay (I sure did)

Any caveats?
- Not really a caveat since the game is priced fairly, but yeah, that short campaign makes me wish for more. The extra content after beating it as well as trying the harder difficulty or the achievements can elevate it though.
- Sprint meter is a bit restrictive. It empties fast and punishes you for not paying attention to it with reduced walk speed. Luckily the game smartly gives you infinite sprint in rooms where there are no enemies so you can get around quicker.
- The slowdown you get when using and reloading weapons makes sense and helps the gameplay feel more tactical, but it can be frustrating at times with the quicker melee enemies, making it hard to tell how to reliably land hits without getting hit back yourself. I think it would be a bit better if the player were allowed to cancel a swing or a gun reload by sprinting, rather than having you unable to sprint until the action is done.

All that said, I love this game. It's fun, feels good to play, has extras at the end for replayability and prices itself very fairly for what it is. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve, so if you're a fan of this genre of game or the titles it's based on, I say jump right in!

There's really not much more to say other than:

1) It's more Stanley Parable. If you liked that game, you'll like this too.

2) It's one of those "the less you know, the more fun it is" games, so don't go diving too far into user feedback prior to playing or you might spoil yourself.
