For a 10 year old game the graphics for the World, and the game-play in general hold up very well in this game. Far Cry 4 would be my pick for best in series, except for the quick time events and BS they throw at you just when the open world starts getting fun.
Prior to the Prison sequence this game delivers maybe the best overall combat experience of the series. The driving on the dirt roads with the vehicles provided feels about right and the density of NPC and stuff to do feels about right too. It's a cool place to hang out, the exploration is almost as interesting as 5 and 6 but the combat is less arcade, don't get me wrong 5 and 6 freakin' rock and 5 is my favorite of the series because I like replaying some of those missions with the NPC buddies using different approaches. 5 and 6 each take a little step toward arcade type head-popping play. 4 at times does become a really good combat game, right up until up you are seemingly bum rushed by NPC from out of nowhere. That happens more in this one than the others and at times it becomes a doorway shooter because of it. But they got the shotguns right in this one ... so even that's just fine too.
I don't care so much about the story, they are all the same to me .... you go do everything and we'll sit back and either do nothing or show up and do nothing and block doorways and get you killed. I expect the Far Cry games to deliver the experience of being someplace in a war zone and I'm just a Merc. or something. The story-line is nice the first time through or for context, but I'm just here to $%#@ things up. 4 does maybe the best job at that. The choice of a story-line does add different endings which means some replay-ability but in the end they are both ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and ... I'm still just here to %^$# thing up.
Hard to choose between 4, 5, and 6 because they are all just different flavors of Ice Cream. Sure everybody has a favorite ... but who eats just that all the time?
Play them all.
I like all the Far Cry games .... but the quick-time sequences and the Prison sequence in this one are some of the most disliked parts of any of the Far Cry games for me. Not the content, or the story, but the whole concept that spoiling the fun ... is fun, or necessary in a game.
Whatever, only if you need a study group to tell you what fun is.
When it gets to the point that the segment that is suppose to relate the story becomes so annoying that a player forgets the story and just wants the $%#@ to end so they can THEN go back to having fun ... yeah, that's kinda' not good story telling.
To that point there's a couple of tactics I use in 4 that make the BS a little more tolerable.
In the "PAYBACK" Mission for example in the "Killing Kaling" segment I take a piece of tape and tape down the CTRL key and the back into a corner and just drop them as they come.
For me 4 does stand out as the one with the most annoying quick-time events. Which is a shame because there is a story there but after doing a couple of these forced BS sequences ... who cares.
Try the Tape trick on this Far Cry if you get stuck in a story mission with unlimited healing (there is no health meter) and annoying NPC to deal with.

The first one for me at least set the standard by which I judge all other games ported over to the Mouse and Keyboard. This one did a good job on that as well but the game-play is not as engaging as the first .... to much pointless filler.
But it's not even really good ... it's just fair.
The first one was a great game, this one is worth about $10 bucks on a good day.
The first couple of hours are basically one long quick time event, whoever thought that was a good ideal should play the crap. It's pointless filler.
If there was some way to skip some of the pointless, annoying, running around for no reason at all, then it would be a great game. As it stands about 25% of the game could just be skipped ... it's pointless and annoying because of the way they did the game saves.
Where as I find many games that are ported over not very PC Keyboard friendly, the game moves / commands on this one work out pretty good on a Keyboard and Mouse and that made the first one doable, the first one was fun, this one is a little more a pain in the ass in comparison and I'm already done with it at about 1.5 hours. If your into quick-time events this one is for you there's not much else to the game.
Map sucks.
Works in some other games, not this one, more annoying pointless check a box, fill in the blank, crap from people that need study groups to identify what the hell fun is.
Maybe if they had balanced the game-play out with some fun stuff in the beginning and then eased into the torture ... maybe, it's a good looking game ... but the first two hours of quick-time events to get from point A to B with no real story plot ... you're just going from here to there.. It's like someone took the normal filler and watered it down even more and was hoping nobody would notice. And that's how they START a game?
Don't think so, this one ain't worth watching a walk-through to play some #$%^ the person that made it probably won't play because they were to lazy to add a way-point option.
The only real puzzle for me here is why do they go to so much trouble to make stuff they themselves would not play. On one level it's for the money but I'd rather be shovel'in Rose Peddles than Horse Manure.
This one kinda' stinks.

Great game.
Good memories.
Started playing it.
Maybe I've changed over the years.
Maybe best played with a controller.
Then I remembered the quick time events and went and watched a walk-through instead.
You can't go home again.
Just sayin'

After about 10 minutes of shooting NPC point blank in the face for no reason at all, I just quit doing it. I mean I walked away. I did not remember questioning the in-game mechanics so early in the game the first time I played this years ago. Like I said, it's the same game ... I just expect more out of a game now after all the years.
Just could not get into it again.
I do recommend the game to anybody that has never played it.
I do think it plays better with a controller.
If you've done this one a long time ago and loved it then, I also suggest you go watch a few minutes of a walk-through, sometimes in life we remember only the good. For me at least .... this is one of them.

Still a great game after all these years. A real progression of the series from #2 but it's starting to show it's age. I like the way they introduce the story and the game in this one but I actually now today after all the installments prefer playing #2.

Pointless.
It's worth $5 bucks for the offline I guess, but the servers are worse than GTA5 was at it's worst point in history.
The Multiplayer is useless, I'm not even 100% sure it's even supported any longer.

UNINSTALLED
AGAIN

I may have gotten in some online play back when it came out, but 95% of my 4 hours is offline campaign play.
Stick with the one before this one, you click play, and you're playin'.

This is one of those games, that if you're a gamer and you play these things like it was a job or a lifestyle ... you 100% should play this game.
Why?
Because this one don't feel like work.
It's fun and engaging, if I made games this is what I'd want to be making.
And it's a simple thing to do because "fun" is a universal language, like laughter.
And it shows 2 seconds in, at the opening menu.
See just how easy it is. And the game stays like that.
I'll agree with many other reviewers opinion of this game but with a caveat, yes it is easy. It should be for experienced gamer's. And an enjoyable experience re-living a movie for greenhorns. GREAT CHOICE developers.
A game where EASY actually means EASY is refreshing. I would recommend a hard difficulty setting for most players on this game.
Enjoy yourself.
There's nothing wrong with that.

It took me a little while to warm up to this Far Cry. More so than in 5 wandering around early in the game is limited by the NPC. Your hemmed in until you rank up and get some weaponry to deal with the Helicopters and Tanks. The overall game-play becomes satisfying after you get you hands on a decent Pistol. No bones about it .. this is a Pistoleros dream come true.
Do yourself a favor and watch a You Tube video or something and go get a decent Pistol hidden nearby right at the start of the game, first thing. I did not and could have saved myself a lot of time and effort trying to work with the starting stuff.
Pistols rule this game ... and it's fun as hell.
Just like 5 it's "A game I'll always have installed". I'll spend a lot of time just goofing off in this game here and there not really focused on finishing the game, they got that right in 6, it's a fun place to visit. It's not that the story is bad or absent it's because they nailed the open world mid game environment so good I'm happy hanging out right here. And ... the insurgency mode after you finish the game is a great addition. The game very quickly goes from you ain't got a chance due to the lack of firepower to becoming a total demolition man and it kind of takes away the desire to do it again in game+ ... I'll just hang out right here.
The glitch that let the NPC drive a player around in 5 has been "fixed", should have been made a permanent feature. Autopilot is there for aimlessly discovering the Map. It's a little thing, but most players liked it. Probably because of the companion mechanics is 6 are with animals. The companions are fun and different from 5's Human NPC and I'm glad they tried something different, the Dogs are cool, but the companions in 5 were armed NPC ... for total mayhem, no comparison. But that's not to say the animal companions in 6 are useless, they're just different. It's nice to have a choice 5 or 6 for overall replay-ability. 5 and 6 ... frick and frack, only the sheer size of this makes me not call it an old time ADD-ON, but that's what my brain is saying. But more of the same really works when it's good to begin with.
The way this game gets a player to go to the Pistol in many situations, that in many cases you normally would not, the confidence you develop in your ability to do with a Pistol what another weapon just failed to do, and how fun it is doing it along the way seems a little unique and is very well done. It kind of sneaks up on you, but it's not like you don't want to use a Pistol, it's more like ... enough foolin' around ... and you just clean house. For me it was subtle and not like I was forced down that path ... the other guns are sweet, but it's like candy popping heads in this game with a Pistol. I play a lot of games , you probably play a lot of games ... this one's Pistol mechanics and game-play stand out. It's memorable ... feels uniquely just a little crisper than the others. It's freakin' fun as hell.
I'm not going to knock or praise any story-line in a Far Cry game, but this one makes as much sense as any of them.
If they had started the Player off with a Pistol with any kind off white-dot sight or something I'd rate this as a must have game for the Pistol play alone Far Cry or not, but it will take a little game play to get that one little thing that makes this game a total blast, a Pistol with some sights .. the white dots are enough to rip ass. Starting the player out with such plane sights in the beginning seems like an unnecessary game-play element to me in such a massive time consuming game. These 20, 30, 100+ hour games should try harder to limit the annoying stuff, not add it.
They'd might as well had started you off with a sling-shot, well maybe it's not all that bad but it is just a waste of time. They should have skipped that baloney and given the Player a proper tool right from the start in such a massive game.
When confronted with the question which is better 5 or 6 my mind equates it with someone asking me ... which is better cheese or burger? It's a freakin' cheeseburger ... the question does not compute.
I'll put a lot of hours in this game.
I may not finish it.
I really don't care because one NPC goes down just like another. One explosion looks and sounds just like another. Don't get me wrong I'm glad they don't force me to end the game and I can hang out here with around 40 hours in and enjoy myself. That's another thing they got right in both 5 and 6.
5 and 6 frick and frack ... in the end why choose, play both.

Dare to be different.
Not my favorite Far Cry game, but unique enough among them to make it worth playing.
They should have stuck a Dinosaur in there at the end for a Boss Battle.
It ain't gotta' make sense, it's a game.

Put on your favorite pair of Blue Jeans and Hat, grab your trusty Assault Rile, jump in the Olde' Ford F-150 and save the County.
What's not to like.

This game actually rates as "one of the Games I'll always have installed".
After you finish the game and go GAME+ and get back into free-mode, this game delivers some enjoyable ride-a-longs with the NPC.
I find hiring an NPC with a lead pipe (MELEE), setting a way-point deep into enemy territory, letting the NPC drive with the tunes on and jumping out and whipping ass with a Bat along the way quite enjoyable and pretty much how I'd spend my time post apocalypse, or whatever..
If it descends into a Roadside fire fight ...
cool beanz, the guns and options are just enough to make them fun to use.

I find pairing up the NPC as hired guns based on their weapons and abilities and re-running particular missions EPIC.
Some of the Characters are funny and fun to run with. They pair up nicely and deliver some banter. They do offer a variety of approaches based on their weapon and abilities.

The Explosions rock.

Lots of stuff to go BOOM

The DLC Space Weapons are a hoot.
