Fun, Beautiful but Brief

A Total War Saga: TROY is a really interesting testing ground for Creative Assembly's ideas for the future of the series and has tons of engaging content. However, it's definitely got issues.

Cons:
1. The AI. Non-playable faction AI is essentially brain dead on lower difficulties while on higher difficulties, EVERYBODY is extremely aggressive. They will cross seas, mountains, forests and rivers just to raze your tier 1 settlement on turn 10. They will sometimes declare war on you out of nowhere, immediately sue for peace or ask for ridiculous concessions over something trivial.
2. Resource balancing. I really love the idea of having different types of resources and that they're weighted differently. But in the course of an average game, the same situation always crops up: everyone gets an extreme surplus of food, you're starved for wood in the early game and stone in the mid game, gold is always at a premium and very difficult to find and bronze severely caps how many elite units you can field. Food is essentially worthless while every other resource, depending on the stage of the game, is both difficult to maintain and desirable to obtain. You can counter this with smart choices in your tech research and expansion but there's just something missing here.
3. Unit balancing. It's nowhere near as bad when I played Troy back on the Epic Games Store when it first came out but there are certain army combos that are essentially unbeatable against 90% of what the AI will field against you. Also, while I love the idea of singe entity hero units, having these guys capable of tanking 2-3 enemy regiments (hundreds of soldiers) is both hilarious and dumb.
4. Epic Missions, basically quests, can have some extremely inconvenient tasks to accomplish whether they be conquering a settlement on the other side of the world or making friends with an enemy who you've been fighting for 30 turns now.
5. Historical mode is a joke. It has basically no content and is undoubtedly the worst way to experience this game.
6. The game doesn't have a huge amount of replayability because there aren't that many factions and certain ones, like Sparta, just aren't that fun to play IMO.

Pros:
1. Bronze Age! The setting is extremely underrepresented in games and media and is a treasure trove of awesomeness. I hope we'll be seeing further expansions to the setting like the Sea Peoples or at least mercenary Hittite units.
2. UI, graphics, art design and music is incredible. The stylized Greek ceramic drawings, the genuinely memorable tracks and the world and battle maps in Mythological mode especially is stellar!
3. Epic Missions, while still having issues as stated in the Cons section, is a great way to learn of the history and drama of the Trojan War. I personally found it very immersive and interesting.
4. I really like how the emphasis on infantry doesn't detract from a diverse battle experience. Tall grass, forests and bodies of water all have important tactical aspects and your units can have some real nuance. Too bad that in the late game, I was always fielding just one or two types of min-maxed armies.
5. Mythological mode is great! The original Truth behind the Myth mode just pales in comparison and I'm kinda upset that it took them an entire year to realize that going full mythological was always the right way to go.
6. Diplomacy is streamlined and very easy to use. While it doesn't reach the complexity of Three Kingdoms, it puts the Warhammer titles to shame.

Conclusion:
All in all, I'm a fan of this game and I think it gets a lot of undeserved hate both for being an Epic exclusive for a while and for being a Saga title. And while it's not perfect, it certainly has a lot of fun and interesting elements to it that anyone interested in the Bronze Age, the Trojan War, the RTS genre and the recent Total War games would enjoy.
