Combat's too hard? Here's some tips!
If enemies always beat the hell out of you, here's some general combat tips, directly from our lovely in-game trainer, Sven!

  1. "Careful of the strong ones, hit them before they hit you!"
  2. "Maim if you can! A wounded enemy will just slow down his allies!"
  3. "Watch your spacing, don't block yourself in..."
  4. "Always think ahead to your next move...a master thinks to their next 7!"
  5. "The dredge are stronger than you! Out-think them!"
  6. "Assess how much strength your foes have left, then prey on the strongest!"
  7. "Don't get surrounded! Keep them in front of you!"
  8. "Protect your strong by sacrificing the weak...tough decisions need to be made."
  9. "You all look sloppy out there, take some time to study your skills in the Heroes Tent!"
  10. "Don't waste time leaving scratches. When in doubt, break their armor!"
  11. "Concentrate! Your mind wanders even a little and death will find you!"
  12. "Don't be afraid to rest if you need it. Can be the difference between life and death."
  13. "A weakened foe is often better than a dead one!"
  14. "Use your abilities in unison...the sum is greater than its parts!"
  15. "Use your battle horn if you're feeling exhausted."
  16. "Not all dredge are the same. Pay close attention to what they can do."
  17. "Assemble yourselves in the order you plan to attack BEFORE the battle!"
  18. "Never give up, fight every battle to the bitter end!"
  19. "Learn to master your abilities, but more importantly understand your enemies..."
  20. "Watch the archers...the more damaged your armor, the deeper their arrows go."
  21. "Judge your enemies movement and stay out of reach!"
  22. "Weaken the strongest, the rest will follow..."
  23. "Don't focus on one at a time! Whittle them all down!"
  24. "Mind your formation, a force united is hard to withstand!"
  25. "Don't try to rely on brute force alone! Break their armor!"
  26. "Which opponent is next to act? Strike them first!"
  27. "Block their movement, shield wielders to the front!"

Excellent advice!

Care I repost this to the subreddit? We keep getting new players there who would greatly benefit from these guidelines.

Yeah! It would be nice if Aleo could pin this up

Is this for Saga1, Saga2 or both? Mention of "Sven" could confuse some...

I can pin it, surely, but I wonder if it would be better as a quick guide to combat. What do you think?

It's a general purpose excerpt, dicrect form the game files, of tips given by the trainer, Sven.

I have not inclueded the part on the talents, that's BS2 only, and removed a couple of non tactical statements in which Sven is bugged by your lazy performance. :steammocking:

Pinning this, but I suggest you revise the title to something more compact, because half of it is cropped when browsing the thread-titles in the forum.

Done.

  1. "Maim if you can! A wounded enemy will just slow down his allies!"
  2. "Protect your strong by sacrificing the weak...tough decisions need to be made."

  4. "Assemble yourselves in the order you plan to attack BEFORE the battle!"

Better idea. Maybe just make your combat system make sense, instead of expecting your players to put up with non-sensical garbage? Survival mode in Banner Saga 2 is the only playable mode in this series. I regret purchasing the first game.

"Hey guys, I know our turn order system is stupid, but here's a stupid tactic you can use to compensate for it." <--- great game design, really

I've been using these tips among others but I'm still losing like half my battles. I'm just glad there's no perma-lost.

They won tons of sales because of the same reason, they cant make a game for ALL the tipes of gameplay...

For the life of me I can't understand how the combat turn-order is enjoyable in any way. I suppose you could call it "challenging" but not in an intelligent way though, more like in a weird nonsensical way. It makes zero sense that the more you kill the harder the battle gets.

I've tried 3 times to play this game on the easiest setting, because the story and artwork are amazing. But the turn-order shenanigans are so frustrating I quit every time. I can't have fun forcing myself to constantly accept the backwards game mechanics. Might as well have made it so that you win battles by playing eenie meenie miney mo.

"Don't focus on one at a time! Whittle them all down!" <--this is the opposite of logical tactics. No game does it like this for a reason, it makes no sense.
