Why is the player count so low?
Is this game unforgiving/too short? Or are pvp battles super tilted? I want to get the game, but the low player count is a bit discouraging.

It took them a long time to fix some very glaring balance issues which pushed a lot of people away.
Are you planning to play the multiplayer much?
The single-player stuff is fine, it's just that the game is more than a year old. People finished it.

You've got 20-60 hours of single player stuff depending on if you like it enough to do NG+ or not. I've literally never played the multiplayer and I feel like the game was worth it for me.
It is a singleplayer game. Don't worry about player count. Many ppl are simply done playing by now. Also online was/is ass, which is half down to netcode, and half how bland their idea of pvp ended up being. The co-op mod is a lot of fun though, which also includes pvp but does it much better. It was made by the same ppl as the elden ring seamless co-op mod and it has a discord server for organizing squads.

PvE: You are only allowed to have one save file.
PvP: It's just bad.

Why would you need more than one save file?

Not everything is a live service, player count over a year after release for a single player game means basically nothing

Same reason you would want to replay any game

Maybe there is a significant portion of the player base that wants to redo the game from a zero point, be it for speed running or just experimenting/funsies.

Without, y-know, having to sacrifice their main save's progress -which affects PvP viability.

BANDAI did a good job ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with FROM on this one between the single save state and requiring the EAC program that ♥♥♥♥♥ with the net code stability.

Armored Core (and mecha in general) is very niche. Before the Souls series, Japan had a modest following for AC and a microscopic following outside of Japan (compared to other genres/franchises). In fact, the following for AC was so small that most people in the community kinda knew each other on a screen-name/gamertag basis (which I'm kinda starting to see now with open custom rooms).

I would say that the current player count is indeed higher than what we had pre-Souls era Armored Core, and though that might seem low imagine it being even smaller. Until FROM does an update that actually adds something to the game (parts/DLC) we won't see a large spike in players again for a while. Once DxM2, Mecha Break and other games hit Steam that will be an even harder hit to AC6's numbers, especially if FROM decides to go silent about AC for a while.

It got very respectable Steam-wise, in comparison to the western equivalent i.e. Mechwarrior.

We ACfans are lean and mean a business!

Make free steam account and put it on a family, so it can access all your games.

boom.

OR just copy the file in C:\Users\[Your PC Username]\AppData\Roaming\ArmoredCore6 and save it somewhere else.

IMo it's the price. I feel like the game has been out for a bit, they should drop the price a little to try and get some fresh blood in. I believe they have only offered 1 or 2 discounts on steam so far.

This, I always keep multiple save files. One for my vanilla save (which I no longer use) and three saves for my modded game. A 100% completion save, a solo campaign save which I restart every so often, and a campaign save for doing a fresh run with other people.
2k current players isn't bad at all. I even get random team ranked matches!

Then just back up your first game file, and then start again. Do you really game on a PC and not know how to use a PC?
