Apology for the "creepy room" and mistakes made
Moving this here to make room for other description elements

  1. What's up with the creepy room in one of the buildings?

    - The guy mentioned in the room, "ERROR404", (guy I met through GMod, don't know how old he is) sent me some real life pictures of himself and his sister or cousin (I don't really know), who at the time was probably underage (there was no sexual or malicious content in the images). He asked me to add them as some funny thing (like an easter egg, in the sense of just tossing these images in, not like some deeper meaning, and obviously horrible execution on my part) and I went along with it. Other props and images in the room just didn't really have a reason to be in a GMod map, but at the time when we were on a server community, we thought it'd be "funny" to include that (this was before a public workshop release was considered, but still a bad idea on a public server, and I was a 14 year old dumb kid)

  2. What I did wrong (when developing this map around 10 years ago)

    - I was around 14 or so when I started development on this map (I'd been playing GMod since I was 11 or so). I really don't know what was going through my head by tossing some random images into an otherwise normal GMod map, but at the time, we didn't think much of it. Something in me should've told me that this was wrong, and that I really had no good, logical reason to even add these kinds of things in the first place, but I went with it, and I'd mentally convinced myself it wasn't a big deal (given the context for adding it) just ignored it throughout the years when it was brought up. I didn't comprehend at the time that images like this, taken out of context (by basically everyone, since I made it public, and even on a public server) would have some serious consequences and perception on me, rightfully so

  3. What I did wrong (this year and leading up to this)

    - See below point

  4. Why the map was "de-listed"

    - Contrary to what a lot of people thought, this map (at least to my knowledge) was never taken down for a community standards violation or other reason from Steam / Valve. After seeing some comments regarding the "creepy room", I panicked and in the moment somehow thought that de-listing the map would be the best course of action (turned out to be a bad idea as described above). I had originally planned to hotfix the issue after delisting it, but I thought that there wasn't any further interest so I figured I could leave it de-listed. I may have inadvertently deleted some of the comments (sorry, I should have just responded and tried to describe the situation)

  5. What I learned

    - First up, I should have probably caught on earlier that, if anyone asked about why the "creepy room" was there in a GMod map, there's probably no easy way to give context or a logical answer. I should have paused and asked myself that in the first place, but unfortunately I wasn't really thinking about these kinds of things 10 years ago. I should have thought about, going from a public server to a public release on Steam Workshop, who is going to see this, and what would their reaction be. Second thing, trying to de-list this in the moment was not a great idea, and it ended up escalating things and making everything worse, as people naturally wondered why the map (and others) had disappeared. Next, naturally everyone has a right to be upset at something like this popping up, in a GMod map no less. Last thing I'll say, is by not communicating better, and not addressing this earlier. Everything kind of compounds on top of that, and all things considered, I understand why people would wouldn't think to believe me or that I'm just bullshitting. But now that I've dug myself into this hole, it's my responsibility to at least try and make it right, instead of just burrowing deeper and ignoring everything.

  6. What's next

    - You tell me in the comments below. Considering everything that's happened, I don't really know if anyone wants the map to be further developed (by me at least). I had been planning on releasing the original VMFs at some point, to help those who were interested or wanted to have their own take on the map. If there's enough interest, then maybe I could finish up what was started in this BETA version. But I've learned the hard way about the consequences some seemingly innocent decision years ago would have, and I'd rather discuss it then try to hide away.

    - In regards to map reuploads on Steam Workshop, I'd prefer if the older versions weren't uploaded with the problematic content (as this version is now back), and I'll figure out that later. But that's in no way the fault of those uploaders, as I'd basically gone MIA for a long time, and they probably just wanted to enjoy the rest of the map. For the ZS version and other maps, I don't really feel those are up to spec, and I probably won't republish them unless I go back and make a whole new version.

  7. Map changes / why I'm pushing a "new" version

    - With my historically bad track record of keeping up with development and not keeping promises on deadlines, I figured it'd be easiest to just push whatever I had. Obviously, all of the bad stuff has been removed (it was already removed after v2 years ago, but v3 of both GM and ZS versions were never publicly released), and I tried to polish what I could. Major highlights: New areas to explore (not detailed / finished yet, basic texturing and lighting), fixes for a lot of broken lighting in V2, color correction intensity is toned down by about 50% so it won't look like Battlefield 3

  8. Community / Comments

    - If you have any feedback, concerns, or really whatever you'd like to ask me, feel free to ask in the comments, and I'll try and be more proactive on answering. I left a lot of comments unanswered previously (I haven't really been keeping up with Steam, lame excuse as I check in now and then and would like to respond), and I'd like to try and answer whatever I can. If you'd rather talk to me one on one, you can add me as a friend, and feel free to DM me (I'll probably just keep my profile private, there's not much to see on there anyway)

TL;DRSummary of the walls of text: Because of decisions I made years ago (when I was immature and didn't understand what the consequences would be), I added something that had no place being in a GMod map. It was never acceptable and should never have been there (or at least should have been removed at the first sign of trouble). I will say from my part there was never any malicious intent, and I had somehow thought it wasn't a big deal for a long time, until I rightfully got called out over it, and even then, it took me forever to take action or to actually say something about it. Even though they're not my images, it's my own fault for agreeing to add them and for not taking action sooner. Especially with the way I made things even more confusing when I de-listed the map and didn't explain why, and I apologize for the mess I've caused. It was a stupid way to handle things and only caused myself more mental anguish as people rightfully wondered what the hell was going on. I'm not asking for forgiveness, but to just understand that it was just something a stupid kid did a while ago, nothing deeper than that. I take this up very seriously now (unlike in the past), and I appreciate the GMod community for bringing these potential issues up to keep the community safe.

I'm not some creep trying to spread creepy images, I'm just some guy who wanted to try and make some maps, but there are a lot better creators on the workshop now that are worth your attention, and developers at other companies who have real talent. Invest your energy in them instead.

If there's any further questions, feel free to post in this discussion, or add me on Steam and message me directly.

Nothing like that. Just some random anime pictures, outdated memes, and irl pictures from the aforementioned guy in the post. Really no need for that in a GMod map and it's jarring to come across.
i liked the V2 version better, this is really good and everything improved and honestly, not seeing those children every time i go to where it used to be the "creepy room" is just a relief, its just that the original map for the HDTF Demo was Cooler imo. isn't there a way i could have that one back? without the pictures of the kids of course :luv:

Thanks for the feedback, bringing back the original V2 version in some way or form has been on my mind since the release of this, and with others mentioning they would like to see it back as well. I've been mulling it over in my head and while I am personally more proud of V5 and the improvements that were made, I don't see any issues with bringing back the old V2 version for legacy's sake. I know that V2 was on the workshop for a very long time and many people have saves or memories of that specific version and its nuances.

I still have the original files so I'll look into doing a V2 "Legacy" release for those who are interested in going back to the original version, and comparing it to the newer one. From a technical standpoint it should be just re-compiling with some of the content slightly modified. Everything else will be left alone to preserve that original feel (despite how accidental and buggy some of it may have been).

While I've been busy with life and trying to jumpstart some other projects, it's unfortunate to hear about recent events regarding some GMod Workshop addons being hijacked and used for malicious purposes. I've been around with this community for a long time, and hopefully things like that are removed and kept away from the bigger audience. Granted, that's only a small fraction of bad offenders, and it's incredible to see some of the mods and other addons still going strong to this day

Here's the "V2" Legacy Edition that you might be interested in. Feel free to try it out and let me know what you think
