Resolving issues with Workshop level updating
In the effort to resolve any issues with updating levels on Steam Workshop, I'm opening up this thread to consolidate the discussion. I'd also like to briefly describe how it works behind the scenes, and with that in mind, mention a few requirements that may not be clear.

During the startup Workshop update we ask Steam what levels you've published to Workshop. In the level editor we simply check any open level against the list of file names that they give us. If it's in the list (meaning the file name matches up) we switch the menus into Update mode (instead of Publish mode). If you don't have a copy of the original file, you can download the file again via subscribing, downloading, and copying that file to your MyLevels.

Requirements before updating a level on Steam Workshop:
  • You MUST allow the Workshop update at the beginning to complete (don't skip it)
  • Your level's file name (in your MyLevels folder) MUST match the original file name when you published to Workshop (e.g. mycoollevel.bytes)

If you're still having an issue updating your level on Workshop after following these, please let me know which level is giving you problems. Thanks!

EDIT: If it is working for you in the latest build, that'd also be nice to know!

Well then, all my (old, from 2015) maps properly show Save & Update, even with skipping workshop update except first part where it does my levels. If I skip during/before the my levels part (or if it can't connect to workshop) then it does show Save & Publish. Sounds like it's all working as intended for me. Haven't made any changes to any of them since late 2015, other than copying the files from one "my games/distance" to another, for backups or exp builds.
Editor bugs aren't my forte xD

The biggest problem with this is if you've extensivley reworked the level, replacing it with the workshop level you would lose all you work.
You can get around this by copying everything in the level then pasting it in the original workshop level. Noted that the editor doesnt like when you select everything and the process is very slow but its better then losing all your work.

Also noted that this doesnt replace level settings either soo youll have to write those down or take a screenshot.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but as I understand it, the contents of the level don't matter. You just have to use the same file name.

I've let Distance do the whole startup update, but it still shows save and publish for my track rather than save and update. The file name is the same as the one originally published to the workshop. (This is regarding Disorientation)

I just went to copy my file from the file I published to the workshop, when the message that there was a duplicate file in the folder came up I chose skip rather than replace the file, so it didn't actually change the file in MyLevels. However; it still somehow fixed the problem, it now shows save and update in the editor. Except that now when I test the level and switch back to the editor it shows save and publish again, and I have to open the level again to get save and update.

Thank you for sharing this information. It's a lot easier to get around a problem when you know exactly what's supposed to be happening.

I simply unsubscribed from my own level and magically the button read "Save and Update" when I relaunched the game. Other methods previously mentioned did not work for me. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the all of the feedback so far! After reading responses here and doing some more testing I can confirm that it seems to break if you are subscribed to your own level.

Potential (temporary) fix:
If you're still having issues, unsubscribe from your level on Workshop to see if Save and Update appears as expected.

Good news is that gives me a reproducible case that I can attempt to follow.

Very strange. I know I'm subscribed to my own maps and it's working. Maybe it only happens if the initial workshop update syncs those workshop maps (like, during the rest of the workshop maps, not during the beginning "my levels" part)? Since I'm pretty sure I've been skipping the update after my levels and before the bulk of the rest of the workshop.

Precisely. If you skip the second part it's as if you aren't subbed to your levels. Still haven't found the issue in code, but I'm just happy that there seems to be a workaround for now.

Seems like just having your own map downloaded in some cases may also cause issues?

I think I finally found a fix for this bug. Anyone want to confirm? http://gtm.you1.cn/app/233610/discussions/4/144512753467393408/
