MOD ABANDONED: Characters: Letters/Numbers

Description
With the working Signposts in-game, maintaining this mod didn't make any more sense. Mod dead/abandoned. The following text just left in place for history:

****

****

****

A collection of letter & number tiles/blocks so you can add actual text to your world builds

*** UPDATED 2017-Nov-22: Brought up to 0.6 ***
*** MAJOR UPDATE 2017-May-21: All code brought to 0.5 levels, all models reworked to greatly optimize and save processor load, and all tiles/blocks now use small stones to build rather than the silly wooden sticks. ***

Hi all!

This mod now contains three sets of blocks:

The first is 7 small 1x1 blocks with (currently) the US/UK 26-letter alphabet, the numbers 0-9, arrows, and blank space. They work just like kids' building blocks. The characters are raised, and written in a darker texture than the surrounding background, so hopefully they will stand out under any lighting/shade conditions.

The second is a full set of US/UK letters and numbers (plus an apostrophe), made very thin, which can be placed directly onto walls as quick signage (see the "HOME" picture above, placed over a house's door). *

The third is the same thin set, but offset deeply for use in two-sided shop signs. By being "offset," it can seem like two tiles are being placed in the same 1x1 space in the game (one tile on the "front" and one on the "back"). This allows you to put whatever text you want on both sides of the sign & read it from both sides. See the set of photos in the images above to describe briefly how these tiles work. Play with them. It might seem tricky at first because of the offset, but it becomes natural quickly.

These blocks can be made in Survival using 2 small stones each, and they are all destructible (each has an integrity of 200).

I hope you find this useful as a way of helping orient players in your worlds and adding to your builds.

* The generated stone pillars on the side of stone walls can interfere with the "hitbox" of these tiles and make them hard to target. If you want to delete a thin tile that's attached to a generated wall, use the hammer tool to deconstruct; look for the tile's hitbox around the outside of the tile, it's there.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate that. Yeah it was fun, and for a while it served a real purpose.

This one would be a beast to try to remake. All of the definitions would need to be changed over to the new versions, and then all of the hitboxes would have to be redone since they wouldn't fit right into the world anymore. I think sadly this mod is done. :(

Really wish you remake it, i miss it .-)

I wouldn't get too draconian on mount points. Right now I've been using the wall tiles to label chests. You can fit 6 tiles across the front. I'll also put a letter on the end of barrels to indicate what's inside. Works great. Big thumbs up for this mod.

@kienata -- If you're using the modded letter blocks in your world, check it out. Big new update. Lots of optimizing, hopefully will have a good impact on performance!

Hey Kienata. I think that's a nice idea. Sure, just please give a pointer to this original mod in your server's notes so people can see where it came from.

I wanted to limit it to JUST the blocks. Thats it really. I just want to ensure we have the smallest addition possible. Also some of the placements for other blocks could be abused (mount points)
by some of the more sneaky players :)
