The Romans

Descripción
Ever since I was a child I have heard great stories of the mighty Greeks and their hoplites in battle, of course, the most notorious of those stories for me always were the Battle of Marathon and Thermopylae. But after years of playing Age of Mythology and reading about the subject on the internet and watching movies, I grew more aware of an even bigger, and in many terms, better civilization, one which we could say shaped our modern society, the Romans.

This project became a dream of mine ever since I saw this on ModDB - http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-roman-legion-expansion but sadly it was never finished, the closest thing we had to an actual Roman mod for the game was in the form of the SPQR pack, which was not a complete overhaul, something which I aimed to make when I started this project.

Rome replaces the Atlanteans as they were first meant to be Romans and resemble them better than the Greeks, a civ which I would like to keep in game. The civ will make use of old Alpha and Beta Greek buildings as to maintain compatibility with the AI. Apart from that most other things have been renamed and replaced as well, including the voices, music and units.

As for how I envisioned them to play, they're a mix of the basic Atlanteans, Greeks (Officers instead of Heroes) and Norse (Legionaries being able to build).

List of changes:

Gods - The Gods were mostly just renamed but their Mythology is unchanged for now due to my lack of knowledge on how to modify the AI and limited assets that I'm working with -

Roman Major Gods:

Gaia - Juno
Oranos - Jupiter
Kronos - Saturn

Roman Minor Gods:

Oceanus - Ocean
Prometheus - Prometheus
Leto - Latona

Hyperion - Sun
Rheia - Ops
Theia - Dione

Helios - Sol
Hekate - Hecate
Atlas - Atlas

Unit list:

Military Barracks - Same Barracks building as before, but now creates mainline Roman units:

Murmillo - Replaced with the Legionary. A general purpose infantry unit that's good against cavalry. Can throw pila (javelines) and build military structures such as the new Castrum, a forward base that can produce some non-auxliary units. They can also be upgraded to Evocatus, a veteran Hero unit that's better against Myth units and can also carry Relics.

Fanatic - Replaced with Urban Guard. Loses one of his swords for a shield and can throw pila to better replicate a true Roman unit rather than a Gladiator. Can be upgraded to Centurion, it's one of the ways I decided to do Roman Officers now.

Contarius - Replaced by Equite. Basically the same unit, just with different looks. Can be upgraded to a Decurion which was the Roman Cavalry Officer.

Auxilia Barracks - Replaces the Counter Building, creates somewhat cheaper and more specialized Auxilia counter units that cannot be upgraded:

Katapeltes - Replaced with Spearman Auxilia. Still a great anti-cavalry unit.

Cheiroballista - Replaced with Manuballista. Basically the Greek Gastraphetes, but Roman. No more fat naked men pushing a cart anymore.

Turma - Replaced by Calvary Auxilia. Same unit, just different looks again.

Arcus - Replaced with Sagittarius. Once again basically the same unit with different textures.

Velite - Replaced by Light Auxilia. This is a Roman version of the Peltast basically, renamed and given a new coat of paint.

Castrum Praetoria - Replaces the Palace, creates Praetorian Guards and Roman Siege weapons:

Destroyer - Replaced with Praetorian Guard. Retains same functionality as before plus it can now throw pila as well and can be upgraded to Evocati Augusti which are vetarans.

Fire Siphon - Replaced by the Battering Ram. Same functionality basically, different skin.

Onager - Same unit, just a fresh coat of paint.

Scorpio - This unit is kind of redundant but I couldn't have Romans without their signature weapon.

Dock - Same units as before, they're largely just reskins. Sadly I couldn't find a replacement for the fishing ship:

Bireme - Quadrireme

Siege Bireme - Siege Quadrireme

Fire Ship - Corvus

Transport Ship - Roman Transport Ship

The only things that haven't been changed so far as mentioned earlier are the Mythology, Titan, Wonders, Walls and Mirror Towers due to either technical limitations (because of the AI mostly) or no assets, that is for now at least.

Credits:

Huge credits go to Purple Design Studios for their Roman Legion mod, they gave me the idea and inspiration for this.

The makers of the 3 mod packs from which I'm using the units from: Leto II for his Roman Legionary from his "Unit Compilation Pack", Master_Foozle for his SPQR pack from which I'm using most of the units and to cerberus013 for his "Ancient units "Ancient" modpack" from which I'm using the siege units from, all 3 are converted by me on the workshop and are also available to the community.

Callistonian for his Legionary heads, UMC High Priority, UMC Ancient Units and Attachment mods on which I've based on and am using assets on and from.

XLightningStormL for his Auxiliary textures.

Diablo for letting me use some of his buildings and na985magi4 for his Roman voice mod as well as sound mods.

AL for his Alpha and Beta content mod from where most of the buildings are from.

vavrinko(SK) for his Classic Blue UI.

Night_Warden from AoMHeaven for his Battle of Alesia scenario.

Le0reck15649 for the Roman music from the Total War series of games.

And last but not least, Sprocket/Zeus for his Optio and Centurion helmets.

And to my other modder friends on here who have supported me and motivated me along the way, I owe them all a debt of gratitude as I owe to Purple design Studios for lighting the fire for this in the first place, thank you once again.

Roman Aeterna.

P.S.

This is the order of the mods you need to have them in for everything to work properly:

muy buen mod amigo
una duda planeas hacerlo en el retold?
Tiger Baron  [autor] 7 MAR a las 11:51 p. m.
It was already implemented somewhat the same way in Divine Edition, however it would take me far too long to do it all on my own like the Aztecs, especially with Retold right around the corner as well.

Is there a way to impliment this the way the Aztec mod does, so that it can be played alongside the Atlanteans?

It's the first time I hear of such a problem so sadly I have no idea.

My Windows also capitulated while I was working on the previously mentioned update so for now the only thing I can suggest is to unsubscribe and delete the mod folder and then resubscribe again to make sure you don't have any corrupted files.

I can't move through the ages can this be fixed?
Tiger Baron  [autor] 3 NOV 2023 a las 3:43 p. m.
It should work in theory if everyone have the mod enabled, yes.

However I have never tried it out because I couldn't find willing people and even if I did my computer is out of commission right now anyway.

can it be used in online match? Given that all players have the mods
Tiger Baron  [autor] 10 OCT 2023 a las 11:14 a. m.
That will be part of the update that I mentioned previously.
