Act Undead

Description
You know what they always say: when in Knox Country, do as the zombies do! This mod lets you disappear among the dead by acting like a zombie! Shamble to your local pub in safety!

In multiplayer environments, Anti-Cheat Type 12 must be disabled for players to fool zombies using this mod.

Act Undead So the Zeds Will Never Find You

Playing with this mod is simple:
  • Grab Accessible Fields by albion (a true hero of Project Zomboid).
  • Enable Accessible Fields and Act Undead and launch the game.
  • Use the gamepad crouch radial menu (which is accessed via the left joystick and enabled in the Accessibility tab of Game Options) or the custom Act Undead menu (bound to Z by default) to begin shambling!
  • Be discrete and don't get too close to zombies.
  • Zeds may spot you if they think you might be alive!

That's it; follow those simple steps, and the undead will surely welcome you. Just be careful when they are nearby; they might be zombies, but they know how food acts. If you don't act like a zombie, they might decide to try a little taste test to be sure.

Please visit the official Project Zomboid server on Discord[discord.gg] and ping me (Burryaga) in mod support if you need help!

Want more options? Visit the sandbox for ways to customize your experience. There are currently two pages of options, though this may evolve with the needs of the mod.
  • The first page (Flags) offers simple on-or-off options, such as the ability to prevent acting from failing (an easy mode of sorts), or the ability to disable Ghost Mode altogether (since many people may prefer to use the mod for its animations and sounds, but do not want to have any special advantages against the undead).
  • The second page (Nums) offers the ability to tweak various numerical aspects of the mod, such as the movement speed of acting players, the delay between their moans, or the likelihood of randomly being identified as a human when moving in close proximity to a zombie.
  • Note that I did specifically mean "moving"; this mod is designed in such a way that hidden actors will not be noticed as long as they do not move, allowing for the possibility of hiding successfully even in situations where the slightest move would get players noticed. Obviously this does not apply if the ability to hide is entirely disabled.

Information for Hosts

This mod works by putting you in Ghost Mode whenever you are successfully fooling nearby zombies. This is much more process efficient than trying to frequently tweak the reactions of every nearby zombie. However, you must disable Anti-Cheat 12 to allow your players to enter Ghost Mode and trick nearby zeds.

Unless an urgent hotfix is needed, I will avoid pushing updates during the weekend.

The Act Undead Framework

To be clear, yes, even when this mod is used with nothing but Accessible Fields (its dependency), it adds a fun new mechanic to Project Zomboid complete with animations, sound effects, and events.

That said, I have carefully crafted this mod to be a possible framework for other modders who want to make their players walk, run, or sprint like the dead.

Please see the Act Undead Framework Guide for more information on how to use this mod as a framework for adding your own custom animations, sounds, and events while players are acting undead!

My own tentative plans for utilizing this framework include:
  • Play Undead: You could force players with an "Undead" trait to move using zombie animations. You could take away the ability to equip things, add some animation states for attacking, and have a new mod ready to go.
  • Play Dead: By adding True Crawl as a dependency and checking its state, you could add a dead animation to the crawling state whenever the animation variable actingUndead is set to true. Maybe you can convince the zombies to stop eating you before you die!
  • Become Undead: Your life need not end when you become undead. Players could be forced to play as zombies after taking too much damage or being bitten.
  • Undead Skill Tree: You could add a skill system in which undead actors become better at fooling the undead over time.

I welcome other modders to take these ideas and run with them. I'm not here to compete.

Compatibility Notes

This mod should be compatible with the vast majority of mods on the Workshop. However, any mods that rely on managing Ghost Mode may conflict with this one.
  • I have confirmed that Act Undead works with True Crawl, Braven's Camouflage, and Improved Stealth.
  • For best results, please use True Crawl's Server Mode when pairing it with Braven's Camouflage or Improved Stealth.
  • I have made a small adjustment to this mod that should make it compatible with Superb Survivors and any other mods that make the admittedly strange decision of using IsoPlayer objects for entities that are not players.
  • I have tweaked the mod to ensure that player will stay visible while playing with various versions of Superb Survivors for those of you attempting to use it.
  • This mod features a variable that can be used to help keep your player character visible when mods make ghost players invisible. If acting undead renders you invisible, try setting ActUndead.mustEnsurePlayerVisibility to be true using the debug console or a patch (please contact me on Discord if you need help doing this).
  • If you discover any other great mods that rely on Ghost Mode for their features, please let me know, and I will consider whether I can make any adjustments to ensure compatibility with those mods.

To answer directly, no, the effect is not dependent on equipped clothing.

I've never heard that reported by anyone else, but I would assume something went fairly severely wrong on that server. You can contact me on Discord if you want some help trying to figure it out, but it is not normal for this mod to stop working in a time-dependent manner; in my experience, only a mod conflict has ever explained any issues with this mod behaving as expected, so your report has no precedent, and I have no immediate suggestions about what could be causing the issue for you. I am also Burryaga on Discord. Feel free to add me.

Recently stopped working on our dedicated server, even though no mods were changed.
Hotkey and animation work fine, but the effect is gone.
Is the effect dependent on the equipped clothings or something like that?

Idk much about mods at all to be honest, but after 2 days of configuring and testing, having accessible fields at top of load order, with act undead at the very bottom, seems to keep my character from going invisible- without the assistance from debug menu.(currently playing on GeForce now, so its not an option.) but it runs with true crawl, crouch, and zombie camouflage,. So there's that, if it can help anyone else out.. This mod is a work of art, and I want others to be able to experience. Thank you!!!

I recommend disabling your mods in small groups on a duplicate of your world in order to identify the conflict precisely. That is not normal mod behavior.

idk why but sometimes my character will suddenly stop moving and get stuck while in zombie mode and i have to turn around a bunch to get him moving again. also sometimes the hotkey or the right click option to act undead just straight up doesnt work, i suspect it may have to do with the lifestyle mod as when you perform a lifestyle act while pretending to be undead, your charcter just freezes in place and you have to reload the game to get him unstuck

Also, in testing, I too run Fancy and Brutal Handwork, True Actions Sitting and Lying and Dancing, and True Crawl - and I've found True Crouch also worked with that set, though I don't use it regularly. Of course I cannot confirm compat with the endless pose mods that exist (all depends on how they're written); can only comment on a case by case basis. But I use many of the mods you mentioned successfully alongside this one, and just thought I would mention that I have never found any effect of load order in terms of where Act Undead falls in that list, and have no technical reason to believe it would matter.

Ah, alright. Cheers!
