Description
Kirby joins Rivals of Aether!

(CITY TRIAL: https://gtm.you1.cn/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2839813438)

-----

Kirby’s moveset is mostly intact from the Super Smash Bros. series, although with some adjustments made to better represent Kirby’s series and adapting his moveset for Rivals. His normals all behave as you would expect them to, as they are just like his normals in Smash. Your Strong and Special attacks now use some of Kirby’s Copy Abilities! Kirby can also perform his trademark Inhale technique and copy the abilities of opponents for his own use!

-----

Neutral Special: Inhale

Kirby performs his trademark ability: his Inhale! Kirby can suck up anything in front of him: opponents, teammates, projectiles, you name it! Inhale an opponent’s projectile to spit it out right back at ‘em!

Inhaling an opponent and pressing down allows Kirby to swallow them, obtaining a Copy Ability! This will replace Inhale as his Neutral Special.

Gimmick: Copy Ability

After swallowing an opponent, Kirby takes their Copy Ability! Rather than gaining a custom ability that is directly taken from his victim, Kirby will instead pull Copy Abilities from his own series, such as Beam or Fire.

There are a total of 15 Copy Abilities that Kirby can obtain… can you master them all?

A large amount of pre-existing workshop characters (1800+ characters to be exact) already have pre-built compatibility with Kirby, meaning that pretty much any character you fight will give Kirby a designated Copy Ability!

(Copy Ability List can be found within the Discussion Tab's, "About: Kirby Copy Ability Compatibility)

If, by any chance, Kirby inhales a character that doesn't give a set ability (which might be intentional or not), a different sound effect will play and Kirby will get a random ability! Consider that our unique take on the Mix ability!

To get rid of a Copy Ability, hold Taunt during Kirby’s Taunt animation. You can also get rid of a Copy Ability while airborne by holding taunt while not attacking, but it will take double the time it normally takes to get rid of a Copy Ability.

Also, exclusively in Training Mode, hold Up and Taunt to gain access to a menu that allows you to manually choose your Copy Ability to easily test and lab out Copy Abilities!

To any workshop developers reading this, if you want to make your character give Kirby a designated ability (if your character doesn’t already have pre-built compatibility or if you just want your character to have a specific ability of your choosing), then check out the guide linked at the bottom of this page!

Forward Special: Wheel

Kirby utilizes the Wheel Ability as his Forward Special! Kirby dashes forward while transforming into a wheel to move at top speed. While moving, Kirby can jump by pressing the Jump button and turn around by pressing left or right. While airborne, you can cancel the move into a doublejump or an airdodge! Press Special to cancel the move into its endlag.

Up Special: Jet

Kirby utilizes the Jet Ability as his Up Special! Donning a jet engine as headwear, Kirby can take to the skies to fly. This move can be aimed in 1 of 8 directions: Up, Down, Left, Right and in between between the 4 cardinal directions. Hold Special during the move’s startup to aim where Kirby is going better as well as to increase the distance Kirby can fly! You can even store the charge of Up Special by pressing Parry while charging to save it for a potential recovery or as a burst movement option!

Down Special: Stone

Kirby utilizes the Stone Ability as his Down Special! This move has different versions depending on if you use this on either the ground or the air.

Grounded Down Special: Stone Uppercut

On the ground, Down Special becomes the mighty Stone Uppercut! This move has very high startup, but if hits someone, it’ll surely rock their socks off while dealing massive damage and knockback to them!

Aerial Down Special: Stone

In the air, Down Special uses the basic Stone technique! It functions similar to Kirby’s Down Special in Smash Bros. While falling, you have soft armor and have a hitbox that deals massive damage and knockback! On the ground, you can hold the Special button to maintain your Stone form to admire your transformation… although you’ll lose soft armor and will be vulnerable to enemy attacks. The form Kirby also takes during this move is random. With so many sculptures that Kirby can turn into, who knows what he’ll be next!

Forward Strong: Hammer Flip

Kirby uses the Hammer Ability for his Forward Strong and performs the iconic Hammer Flip! While this move doesn’t have the ultimate boss-killer power that it has in the original games (unless you’re playing with runes), this move still packs quite the punch! Fully charge this move to really leave a blazing mark on your opponent!

Up Strong: Needle

Kirby uses the Needle Ability for his Up Strong! Large spikes will protrude from Kirby’s body above him. This move has great range, so it has great anti-air potential. At the middle spike, there is a sweetspot that deals strong knockback and damage, so aim this move well to pierce your opponents!

Down Strong: Staff

Kirby uses the Staff Ability for his Down Strong! With the power of an extending staff, Kirby uses it to attack on both sides of him at once! This has the fastest startup of any of Kirby’s strongs, but has the worst killpower out of any of his strongs in exchange for that. Use this to close openings and cover a wide range!

This character is fantastic with a couple issues that hold it back from being truly great. The main issue I see are with Kirby are his copy abilities. They are insanely weak with little-to-no kill power whatsoever. Having Kirby's main gimmick be so underpowered like this seems weird. Additionally, many of Kirby's multihits are prone to players falling out of them, or being able to tech out of them on the floor like the sword ability.
Those are my two main issues with Kirby I can think of right now. Outside of that, the gamefeel, art, and programming of the character are great.

not really, no. last I recall our options for uspecial were probably hi-jump or rising break(which he has as the fighter ability attack anyway)

Nice updates! Have you ever considered giving kirby his original smash up b though? Feels kinda awkward when recovering and I generally don't see it having much use when he already has two dashing type attacks, the wheel and his dash attack. His smash up b would give him more combo potential too and maybe balance his recovery a bit better

oh, that is extremely disappointing

iirc, they had to be recorded manually from the game in a room with no background music/noise

For whoever worked on the sound design, could you provide me the location where you got your clean rips of the various Star Allies SFX ? I'm working on Marx and would appreciate a source of the games sounds as I cannot find any online.

I'm in the workshop discord and my user is i_am_kenokeno, for whoever on the team can help, thanks in advance !! -Keno

imo this is my favorite kirby so far in the rivals workshop lmfao

actually has a set of abilities and some really good copying mechanics, and the fact it also shuffles the copy if the copying isn't yet compatible already makes it really interesting

not to mention a good amount of its moves are actually good
