Extra (but important) Information
———————————————————————————————————————
This is just some extra information of the aircraft to give you a better understanding while flying it.
The physics of this game do not allow for tip-jet autogyros to function as they do in real life, so the main rotor is powered by 2 small electric motors until they reach an RPS of 19.45. Once they reach this limit the rotor switches to engine power where you will then be able to take off. For a better experience please follow the steps as suggested in the Flight Manual. The 2 props act as yaw stabilisers in helicopter mode, again, due to the games physics and content.
Oh and the plane, obviously, does not have GPS autopilot because of the simple fact that its a stupid thing and this is the late 50's. It does feature an autopilot that keeps it level.
The Fairey Rotodyne can also land like a plane in the emergency that the helicopter control stop working. (Stall Speed depends on how fast the engines are running due to the main rotor lifting half the planes weight.)
If the gear does not go up this is probably because there are 2 seperate gear buttons to eliminate risk of raising gear on the ground. Both buttons must be switched to raise gear.

Main Description
———————————————————————————————————————
The Rotodyne was an autogyro made in made in the late 1950's by the Fairey Aviation Company. An autogyro is basically a plane that has a free spinning rotor that turns naturally as it moves through the air. The Rotodyne however was different to just a normal autogyro. The Rotodyne had, like any normal autogyro, a large freely spinning rotor. But this rotor was powered by a tip-jets, which sat at the end of each rotor blade and burned a fuel/air mixture bled from the main turboprops. The tip-jets were a way in which to spin the rotor without turning the entire aircraft in the opposite direction, eliminating the need for a tail rotor in which to stabilize itself. The tip-jet rotor configuration made it so that the Rotodyne could not only land on the momentum of the spinning rotor, but also take off on it. The purpose of the Rotodyne was to carry passengers from city center to city center where it could land on buildings and heliports. The Rotodyne brought the non profitable 20 - 30 cents per seat mile for helicopter transport down to as little as 4 cents per seat mile.

Fairey Rotodyne Passenger
The Fairey Rotodyne Passenger Version features a standard Rotodyne cockpit with a small luggage compartment and seating for up to 20 souls not including the Captain and First Officer. There is an anchor located in the front wheel well for when it gets very windy on helipads.

Fairey Rotodyne Cargo
The Fairey Rotodyne Cargo Conversion Version features seating for up to 10 souls (again, not including Captain and First Officer) and a slightly upgraded Rotodyne cockpit with an overthrottle switch for takeoff and landing with extra heavy loads. The Fairey Rotodyne Cargo has the standard seats removed and 10 small seats stuck at the front to the side to make room for cargo.
The Fairey Rotodyne Cargo is a very good choice for Career mode due to its very low mileage and its ability to land on oil rigs while being able to fly at 110 knots. There is also an anchor located in the front wheel well for when it gets very windy on helipads.

How to fly

Takeoff
You must take off in helicopter mode as taking off like a plane can be quite damaging to the landing gear. Landing like a plane, while not advised can be done.
After Taking off climb to a sufficient height where you will then increase collective and switch off rotor controls & Rotor tip-jets (the Rotodyne's never exceed speed is 150 knots and cruise is 90-115 knots). Once you are fully in plane mode decrease the throttle to 0.55 on both engines for a smoother more fuel efficient cruise, at this throttle the stall speed is ~80 knots.
(The fuel consumption of ~2.5 liters/second may seem like a lot at first but at 102.5 knot average cruise that is quite a good amount).

Landing
Increase the throttle to maximum and decrease collective to 0 (keep in mind the collective goes to -0.1) and enable Tipjet Valves and Rotor Flight Control. The cockpit has a lot of visibility so landing shouldn't be a problem for anyone. Once you have successfully landed you must hold down arrow so as to keep the aircraft down on the ground and enable Rotor Brake. Lower all throttles to 0 and switch everything off. There is an anchor located inside the wheel well incase it's windy as the wind does like to push it around.

All Controls & What They Do

  3. Gear Control & Autopilot (Autpilot must have trim set to +0.16)
  4. Rotor Control
  5. Engine & Hydraulic Power

  1. Second Gear Switch (2 separate gear switches, both must be on to raise gear)
  2. Rotor & Engine RPS
  3. Autopilot On Light
  4. Battery
  5. Engine RPS & Fuel Pressure

good luck getting this to work after 2+ years

yess someone has made one

@ram249 yes, unfortunately updates to the game have messed with the vehicle a bit. I havent tried it out in a while but through development the gear were completely fine. Try restarting your game as i find that helps sometimes when landing gear buckle under pressure. You might also have too many other vehicles spawned in your render distance which will affect the gear. About a week after i released the rotodyne it started causing everbodies game to crash when you went far distances with it which is ashame but i think it's stopped that now.

Hi @shikigami99, Yes I do realise that the game crashes a few minutes after takeoff and i have absolutely no clue why! There is a lot of logic going on in this thing that I redo in lua if I could be bothered and that would probably fix the problem. When building this thing it never once crashed my game and it is probably new updates that have done after I released it. I hope you could learn as much as you wanted from it before it crashed your game though lol.

Very nice. I'm building my own and I decided to come see if anyone else had made one, and get some ideas while I'm at it. Only problem I had was just after takeoff the game crashes, but other than that it's great.

@regularpit you should try making your own things, the way i learnt to do all this was by building harder and harder things. Don't build too hard things to begin with or it will take too long. I challenged myself by putting the frameworks for instrument panels on my creations and then watching the tutorials while making stuff. gl

I wish some one would explain logic and how to is used in stormworks because the connections and all that are confusing. Also anyone know how to make a hybrid boat like a small escape ship
