Pretty similar to deadcells gameplay wise. The biggest difference is this game takes place over 5 chapters (with random mini levels themed to the chapter) instead of getting to pick from a set of huge levels.

You have three different ways to gain power 1. Dark quartz. You get this just from playing and it's used to A. buy permanent upgrades from the hub (Castle) B. Unlock items and Skuls from an NPC in the shop room. C. Dump a whole bunch of it to an NPC in the Castle and repair the Castle.

It serves as a currency for permanent power ups or unlocks.

2. Items. You get these from A. the shop room B. Item rooms or boss chests which give a choice of 3 items and 9 items respectively. C. NPC's (give one some money for a random item or encounter one who will duplicate an item in your inventory) D. Mini bosses who will drop themed items sometimes (you can get them normally via chests though) E. Mini game rooms.

Items will help shape your build. They give you an item specific power up and each item also has 2 inscriptions out of i think 12. There is one or two items which have random ones but they are usually set in stone for that item. These will give a big bonus which will alter your game play once you have a certain number of items with that inscription (2, 4, and sometimes 1, 3 and 6. Not common though). For example the Soar inscription will greatly buff your power while in mid air with items that will also buff you in mid air. Useful for Skuls that stay in the air.

3. Skuls. They are 3rd because they are the least important since Little bone (the Skul you start with) is actually really strong on his own. You get these from A. Skul rooms. B. an NPC in the shop room which will trade you a Skul for free. C. A very rare NPC which will trade health for a Skul. Basically the main character can put them on and gain the experience of the Skul. So if the MC puts on a ninja Skul he is able to use the power of the skul and use the ninja's power when he was alive.

You can hold 2 at a time and they come in four rarities. Common, Rare, Unique and Legendary. All Skuls can reach Legendary, and their base tiers are basically just how likely you are to get them. They "level up" with bones. You get these from an NPC or by destroying Skuls you don't want. You need 10 bones 30 bones and 100 bones to level up Skuls. Common to Rare is 10 Rare to Unique is 30 and Unique to Legendary is 100.

You will likely get a Legendary by the start of chapter 3 from a Common skul(You have 2 chances to level them up via an NPC each chapter)

The gameplay is basically get buffs and Skuls/Items (2 each once you have the NPCs for it) from the Castle and then beat rooms while collecting gold and Skuls. Find a Skul you want to use, and then start building around it while collecting bones. Get stuff from the shop room, beat the miniboss and if you have the bones, use the NPC to level up the Skul. Keep beating rooms until you get to the Boss, defeat it and pick one of the items that will drop from the chest. Go to the next act. You have another chance to upgrade your Skul before going to more rooms. Repeat until you win or die.
