What follows is my personal subjective opinion. I'm by no means authority on all things Doom , but i have played every Doom game except for Doom 64 so i feel like i have a right to one.

Doom Eternal is a great game , but it also is severely over-designed game. We have this mentality that sequel to a game or a movie HAS to be bigger and has to be "better" and i put better in commas here.

Core gameplay is still great in Doom Eternal , arguably even smoother and more 'flowy' than in Doom 2016. But amount of added mechanics, gimmicks, side mechanics is just too much , man. And i blame that 'bigger/better' mind set for this. You have jumping puzzles ( i absolutely hate them , i didint come to play uncharted , thank you ) , too many upgrade currencies and systems ( RPG is my favorite genre but that is not what i come to play Doom for ) , we have a hub now and i so on and on.... This is not what Doom is. I want to kill demons and unwind after a long day at work , not ponder what to invest one of ten currencies to and which +1% damage upgrade to choose. At this rate third entry will be open world game with side quests and crafting system akin to Ubisoft open world game.

I feel like they got formula well enough first time around with enough modern touches for contemporary audiences whilst keeping the core of what Doom is. We are Doom Slayer , we came here to rip and tear through hordes of Demons , not to stare at endless amounts of upgrade options. And this is where my biggest gripe with Doom Eternal resides. Let me tell you a short story . I'm playing on Ultra Violence , that's how i always 'DOOM' . I was doing one of those Slayer Gate things , i died , which is okay since i'm on Ultra Violence, and i got prompted this message in essence saying that maybe i need to upgrade my equipment more and comeback at later time... and that is there Eternal really tickled me wrong. Doom is no longer about skill , Doom is about being right 'level' now. And no ,this is not what i want from my Doom experience.

There are way more things i could point my finger at but that would make this review excruciatingly long , hence how overflowed with unnecessary fodder Eternal is.

I would like to end with saying that i dont hate this game. I will probably continue playing and having decent enough time not to feel like i wasted my time or money on it , but i also feel strongly that they are going the wrong way and i hope that 3rd entry ( if there will be one ) will get back to more pure and refined formula , rather than jam game full of modern checkboxes .

Thanks for reading. Comments are welcome as long as they have something of value to add.

@SirFortisque I'm playing the game right now it literally says that the first time you lose. I wouldn't call it "needing to be the right level" or anything but the game is pretty overdesigned.

I agree with you in 100%.
I only expect one thing from this game:
Give me a target and I'll gladly smash it!

Looking at all these comments: so you guys just want another recycled, generic shooter? I don't really care about the upgrades but the combat in this game is the most intense, skill based and challenging of any fps I've ever played.... They completely reinvented the wheel in a way that caters to hardcore players who want a good challenge they can over come with skill, which is what this game delivered... I swear, had they copied 2016 you guys would be on here crying they just copy and pasted the same from four years ago, no pleasing anyone these days.

"and i got prompted this message in essence saying that maybe i need to upgrade my equipment more and comeback at later time.." Thats not what happened. It asked if you would like to respawn with sentinel armor, which is a buff cause you kept dying.

"If they didn't go for a cartoonishly goth art-style..."

Does this mean that the world isn't scary at all?

Developers are all going to this "hardcore" type mode. "Micronerd" mentality. If you play doom for 5 minutes on a mouse and keyboard you will get worn out pretty quick with all the different combinations you have to keep pressing. I've played Doom since the release on Dos and I liked Doom 2016. This one feels like it's going for the money grab of course. The 2016 version looked better in my opinion and had that horror feel that Doom 3 kinda had. Doom is supposed to be a FPS horror game not a cowboy wrangler game. I played through it on Ultra Violence all the way through but my damn hands were cramping lol.
