It did not live up to its hype, felt it was a rather dull experience. I was expecting the guns blazing exhilarating gameplay of Battlefield 3, but it felt more like grinding through Bakhmut in the Roblox Wagner PMC DLC. Communication like in the trailers was also bar to none. It looked promising, but it's not the community for me.

Star Wars the Old Republic is a continuation of the Knight of the Old Republic (KotOR) games, as replacement for a third installment. The game tries to follow in the single player games' footsteps by adhering to the same design principles; player-driven narrative, your own multi-specied crew, your own ship, extensive customization, classes, numerous planets to visit each with their own storyline and detailed worldbuilding. The gameplay is fun and offers what you'd typically expect of a MMO; cooperative heroic missions, flashpoints, worldbosses and a thriving PvP scene. Storywise however, SWTOR doesn't hold up to the KotOR games at all. The quality of writing varies per class story, but for a company that was just starting to round up the legendary Mass Effect trilogy it fails to be consistently engaging. Whether this subpar writing was due to shifts in creative direction, resource allocation or time constraints is unknown to me.

The cinematic trailers by BLUR studio pulled me in as a 12 year old kid, the discovery of the roleplaying community is what kept me glued to the game. I spent countless hours roleplaying in cantinas and guild strongholds with people who always showed an immense level of creativity in their act. To supplement these in-game activities, people would create lengthy backstories on Enjin forums which could pass for official novels.

A few years ago, BioWare made the decision to shift the difficulty down a few notches and added level scaling, making everything achievable on your own. This has completely diminished the need to socialize and collaborate with other players. The sense of wonder that once drove players to chat and work together has been replaced by a focus on solitary gameplay, transforming what was once a thriving MMO experience into a single-player game (akin to how World of Warcraft changed). I'm not saying people don't do quests together anymore, but there's just no necessity for it anymore. In the end the experience as a whole is sadly not the same anymore. The game still offers an interesting world and storyline, but I find myself longing for the days when the game fostered more interaction between the community.
A lot has changed since the creation of my Sith Warrior in 2012. This is what happens when the true essence of a MMO gets lost, it's called a Massively Multiplayer Online for a reason.
