FINAL EDIT: the Xenobiology update has released, STICKY TERRAIN IS FIXED :D, we finally got some good wholesome content, the earlygame and midgame is alot more fun with more to do and see, all round a fantastic update! im leaving the review negative for the cash shop and exo chip nonsense. along with a handful of bugs. honestly tho a real step in the right direction and more then i ever expected outta nowhere.

This game used to be amazing before they stopped development to sell cosmetics and run recurring events designed to sell you more cosmetics. as soon as they released the V-TOL and Hoverboard, and tried to claim it as new content, without adding any purpose they can do better then anything else. the game died for me

Edit2: i feel like i need to say, after reading and replying to comments, that if you play the game from a new player perspective, its still an incredibly happy and fun time for the first 25h or so (roughly depending on playstyle, mileage will vary) the issues really only come to light if you look really closely or have a very big savegame/spend alot of time on one world. as far as repeatability goes, nothing changes for each run besides knowing where you need to go to get things without looking at the ingame astropedia, so its really just how you decide to play the game. i personally enjoy having all my eggs in one basket for progression based titles, and super sizing whats possible by the end. the automation update was freaking amazing for me personally, really wish they had done more with that. i personally dont enjoy restarting a survival game for any other reason then updates. for example, @steeeeeve got 100+ hours from different saves restarting more often then i would, so there is still alot to love and enjoy here. not saying the game itself is bad, just the current direction is something i dont like or agree with.

-driving is faster then flying.
-hoverboarding is going to kill you with fall damage
-V-TOL has next to no cargo capacity, negating any of its potential value to players as a vehicle.
-walking on the surface of any planet besides the spawn can cause to you never be able to walk like you are on flat ground, constantly stopping for a half second once every 1/3 steps, (has been a bug report in the game for OVER 2 YEARS WITHOUT A FIX)
-sliding on other planets will probably cause you to die randomly if you hit an imaginary ledge while going downhill
-placing tethers (for breathable oxygen) causes extreme lag in the mid-game stages of any base with more intent then just storing a few things. (if you like to build big, better have a powerful CPU and not like it very much)
-interacting with vehicles is very buggy and weird, with the most probable ending to you attempting to leave a seat, being death from fall damage as you either clip through the map into the terrain, or be jettisoned by the seat high enough to kill you if you dont have a jetpack on at all times.
-"Automatic" miners dont work anymore if you leave render range, making them essentially useless after you exhaust the basic patches around your base, and a willingness to AFK for several hours to fill a large container.
-FOR 3 YEARS batteries/solar/wind turbines have had messed up visuals and stopped correctly displaying power levels if you take them to other planets, and cause large amounts of lag while in that broken state, with only a reload making them return to normal, making a full game restart after every planet hop, is the only safe way to have a large save without corruption.

-Dev's don't care about the people who play their game, they only fix the bugs that extremely new players would run into, so you can more easily get past the refund window before the JANK rears its huge head.
-Cash cow company, and that's an observation of fact rather then an accusation as the anniversary for NO NEW CONTENT AT ALL fast approaches.

Edit:vengeur50: you should've mentioned the in game shop a bit more, like how they added an in-game currency for the purchases instead of a direct purchase. There's no reason for this currency to exist besides inciting players to spend more money (because of the leftover qbits) and how it's the first tab on the menu.
(great point thank you, however i dont begrudge the existence of the store, devs gotta eat too. my problem with the store is that not enough is being done to justify the expense, as the only new stuff to be released in a very long time is just $$$$$stuff. ive personally spent around 50$ for skins/suits/addons and loved em to bits. but wouldnt give them a single cent now that nothing is coming out. )

@finn they havent added anything substantial since the automation/xenobiology update. look at all the recurring events and cosmetics being added to the store. how many times are you expected to complete the EXACT SAME events every year? the awnser to that question is.... yes.

@steeeeeeve your comments are the exact reason i left them enabled for the review, i wanted as many other thoughts and opinions as i could get, and with the edits now i feel this properly reflects my reccomendation for friends/ people like me, with as little bias as possible for mostly personal issues (minus the old bugs)

We could argue about it for months without it being a problem becuase you havent tried to insult or be negative, just shared your thoughts and ideas to counter my own points, perfect if you ask me. And totally agree with it being entirely choice based, i also avoided the drill drop method after the first few times, tho seeing it work for the first time after watching Z1 do his golden run was pretty awesome xP and yeah i have a habit of making big highways between outposts so lots of ploughing here too xP its really toocbad the drill arm suuuuuucks, tho im curious if you have found any viable use case for it?

Yeah I don't agree with Magic Sheep's comment, but the fact that you played that many hours and then wrote a negative review about direction for late game is a bit absurd. Your edit2 basically fixes all that and validates your negative thoughts on the game but that is due to my personal biases, top price games usually get 200-600hrs from me, mid price games get ~100-200hrs, and low price games like Astroneer will usually get ~50ish hrs if good enough, indicating whether a game was worth it or not, so sorry about the misunderstanding there! I also think the missions sped the game up too much, but everything is a choice in this game, we have a drill rig to literally drive to the center to quickly complete every planet, but didn't use it at all in prior run through's as it makes the game boring. Now we just use it as a snow plow for the hoverboards :P

@steeeeve i added an edit2 to the review acknowledging that you can still enjoy the title if you are willing to restart more often that someone like me would, and i really hope the switch release helps them restart development, however i still believe it currently costs too much with the ingame store existing, and charging uneven amounts of qbits being an obviously malicious practice, on top of charging for the game itself.

if they started releasing content in DLC form, id buy it all. in a heartbeat.

also you can get a QRTG hoverboard and portable oxygenator within 5-6 hours of starting a new save, so having the progression end there means survival is borked unless you intentionally choose to ignore the overpowered tools.

@steeeeve if you read the post and comments, you would see that i spent 60+ on cosmetics before the game stopped releasing content. and now do not believe it is worth it, and you are clearly missing my point, being ABLE to carry 20+ canisters without slowdown is stupid as hell, there should be progression centered around transportation, travel and hauling, all of that removed by exploiting winches and carrying physics being basically turned off. why not just play creative mode if you dont want progression????

@MagicSheep i made this review because i used to love the game alot, and my 300h was spent enjoying and learning about what is possible and what i enjoy doing. the game took a direction that i dont like, so i made a big comment about it. you dont have to agree with me and you certainly dont need to talk **** on people for having an opinion thats different then yours xD
MagicSheep 10 Jan, 2022 @ 1:03am
Only a moron gives a game they spent 300 hours playing a bad review.
Steeeeeve 9 Jan, 2022 @ 1:56am
Also yes the game does end there, as I said though I have restarted this game 4 times and gotten 100 hours out of it. If you played for that or more then this game is worth recommending for its price point, the Switch release is the gateway for them to expand capacity and improve the game as they do not charge enough outside of game sales.
Steeeeeve 9 Jan, 2022 @ 1:54am
If that is the way you use the hoverboard then you actually have no idea how to use it at all so I forgive you for that. You need to time space perfectly to get airtime, use your vacuum as you fly to create ramps on the fly, create stadiums and other cool crap.
Your comment on carrying capacity proves you do not understand what I just said at all, you can carry all kinds of things as you fly now, 20+ canisters without slowing down the hoverboard is insane!

I am done wasting my time on such a small minded approach to this game, you sound like someone who prefers a linear game that tells you exactly what to do and offers no creativity or flexibility.

True that there is not enough content to continue beyond, but for the price I paid, 100 hours is really really good! How much have you donated in cosmetics and support to the company to ensure they are able to continue releasing good content?
