A Near Perfect Remaster

What I Liked

I have tried four iterations of Final Fantasy. First on the NES, then the Playstation, then the iPhone, and now this version on the PC. Hands down this is the best version. Why? Because I was able to beat it. I never beat the game up until now. Each time something would stop me. Mostly, I felt like it was a chore to get through the game. This time it didn't feel that way. The reason being is that with the memory settings, your characters can repeat the same skills and the speed of battles increase. I think that cut a good 15 hours off of the game. These are optional, but they really help.

The graphics were great. I enjoyed the update to the graphics in every setting. Additionally, the music was incredible. It's the same, great Final Fantasy music.

What I love about this game is that you can make up your own party with whatever classes. I always run two Red Mages, a White Mage, and a Black Mage. I had no problem beating everything in the game. I had to grind some levels, but I enjoyed doing it.

I have to admit, I save scummed a bit. Characters stats seem to go up randomly each level. I would do a quick save right before I leveled. If I didn't get the stat increases I wanted, I would just reload. I don't mind that I did this, since I wanted a strong group of characters.

What I Did Not Like

The font was just horrible. I held off on buying the game until mods came out to replace the font. Luckily the font I found was near perfect for the entire game.

I also had a lot of screen tearing when I first started playing. I had to go into the NVIDIA Control Panel settings to figure out how to resolve the issue. Never had to do that with a game before. Lastly, the game opened in windowed mode, despite me setting it as full screen each time. This could have something to do with the setting I changed in the NVIDIA Control Panel, but that would seem odd.

Why I Stopped Playing

I beat the game! Not only that, I was able to get all of the achievements. It's very rare for me to do that in a game, and I enjoyed doing it in this game. I can't wait to try the other remasters!

Disclaimer

I have been a gamer for over 30 years. I tend to play mostly PC games. I also bounce around between games A LOT. I may purchase a $60 game and play it for 2 hours or spend $10 on a game and spend 50 hours on it. Even if I played a game a short time, it does not mean it is bad. It just means another game caught my attention. I also complain about flaws in games a lot, even about the littlest of things. Keep that in mind when reading my reviews. If I do not have a complaint, then the game must be special!

They also released an easy as pie version on the DS that had some extra content.
