There's no higher pucker factor than backing into the deepest part of a closet, hand clamped over your mic, and hoping those footsteps thumping down the hall towards you are just a wayward team member. Great fun, and in my scant few hours, the community is surprisingly chill for such a popular game.

Remember those slaughter map WADs for classic Doom 1 + 2? Cross that with a Doom Eternal final exam for every fight. It can feel a little cheap sometimes (hope you like Imps!), but keep at it, and you'll be as comfy here as in the main game.

Just one big nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up playing X-Wing, Tie Fighter, or X-Wing Alliance. The prologue is a little handhold-y for me, but from there it opens back up to the classic sim-lite feel. Busting up the turrets and subsystems of a cap ship, shaking missiles, cycling power sets, it's got it all. The campaign is a little on the easy side, and I have yet to touch the MP, but I'm expecting an XWvTF feel from that. Perfectly playable on M+KB, and I'm looking forward to dragging my HOTAS out of storage to give that a spin.

EDIT: Pretty close to the end of the campaign, it's a bit predictable, but entertaining none the less. It's clearly meant as training ground for MP though.

As for MP, it's fun...when the matchmaking isn't trying to force that 50% win/loss rate. Sometimes you stomp, sometimes they stomp, there's really no in-between. Dogfight seems like it would get old pretty quick, but Fleet Battle is a nice back and forth, and is also playable vs AI as co-op or solo play, if you want to avoid all the people screaming into the mic (Thank you, options, for allowing me to disable VOIP)

It's a blast to play on the populated servers and really well fleshed out for an EA game, unfortunately, those populated servers are always maxed out. Grab a drink, read up on your class, and be prepared to wait.

You're a warrior sent off on a holy quest blessed by blah blah blah exposition exposition, something something magic city.

What really matters is it's a sword and sandals barbarian epic by way of a metal album, Dark Messiah's all mighty kick, Bloodborne's health system, and a giant friggin' hammer.

It's like the devs took the gameplay of System Shock 2, the map and resource management of FTL, and crammed them into a blender, then lovingly read it 2000 AD comics as it blended. Best played in hour or so bursts, as I can see the potential for gameplay getting stale on marathon sessions.

The short and sweet of it - It's a coffee break Rougelike. Not in the increasingly watered down meaning of Rougelike where it just means random levels with permadeath, but of the actual "Isometric RPG with depth and a quick trip to the mortem screen for not thinking". You'll either like it, or you won't, it's not the run and gun rampage of it's inspiration, nor drawing elbereth in the dust and waiting dozens of turns. It's quick, it's satisfying, and the developers are incredibly active within the community, what more could you want?

UPDATE AUG 5 2021, 1.0 RELEASE: Wow, what a ride this has been! Exotics, Uniques, Master skills, and tons more, the dev team put in a *ton* of work over the years. Since my initial review, it plays better, feels deeper, and every win feels more satisfying than the last. Grats on the 1.0!
