This is basically just "3rd partying: The Game". There's no incentive to do anything other than wait for everyone else to do the work, then swoop in and try to take the win at the last second. Movement, gunplay, abilities, all that is neat, but the actual gameplay is everything I hate about battle royals, without all the fun of battle royals. If you're into ratting, you'll love this game.

Only pick this up when it's on sale and have friends to play with. It's wild how unpolished this game STILL is. The devs learned nothing from the Left 4 Dead franchise and have been left in the dust by games like World War Z, Vermintide 2, Darktide, Deep Rock Galactica, The Division, etc.

Out of all the 4 person, horde type, co-op games I've played, this is by far the least engaging. Too many fun-sponges throughout the game, too rough around the edges, too many barriers of entry, complete lack of progression, it's just a mess. There are definitely better games at the same price point.

tl;dr - Fun game with potential, but not worth sinking a ton of time into.

Gameplay - It's alright. I'm constantly having to spam buttons, because the game won't let me reload, open a box, cast an ability, climb a wall, etc. It's not clear whether it's some animation lock or something, but it's frustrating. The running and gunning feels nice, but the companions take a HUGE backseat in the gameplay. I wish they were more engaging to use and interact with, but in my experience it's just "go attack", then you forget about them. There are lots of unique gun types to play around with, but the pistols are overwhelmingly bad, which is a shame because of all the pistol related perks there are. Sniper rifles are tough, because of how randomly and fast everything moves, but you can make it work.

Items - The perk system seems neat at first, but you eventually realize they force you into specific playstyles that aren't particularly impactful. There need to be a lot more and the damage output really needs to be bumped for later missions. I tried to stack melee perks one mission and it was basically useless. The gun upgrade system is neat, but so much of it is just upgrading for an extra 1-2% damage increase. I wish they got additional actions when used or something.

Baddies - The AI is overwhelmingly lackluster. There are entire chunks of boss fights where I've just ignored them and was fine. They're not particularly hard to dodge and, unless they're big baddies, don't do a ton of damage. In later missions, they just turn into bullet sponges without any additional difficulty or required skill to beat them, which is pretty annoying. The bosses are where the game shines, in monster creation at least. Everything else is forgettable.

QoL - This game needs a ton of QoL changes, but none of them are deal breakers. I just don't understand why some menus let me collect all rewards, while others don't, and some make me click each individual one, which puts me through its own little cinematic that I can't skip, while others make me long click to collect. It feels like a mobile game that has game time as the criteria of whether it's good or not. If they introduce "collect all" buttons, that would be solve all these problems, especially since there are rewards to collect at ~5 different screens, each with multiple tabs to collect stuff in.

FTP - You can definitely get through this without paying a dime and have some good time, but I'm worried the PvP might be pay-to-win, given how difficult it is to unlock the better guns/equipment in the game, without real money.

Conclusion - This is a good base game, but needs some work. You can definitely hop in and run around with friends or randos without a problem. It's tedious to click through menus and some of the gameplay is clunky, but the shooting is good and it's neat experience. Hopefully, the devs will continue to release content that addresses these issues, because there's a lot of potential here.

Basically, the YouTube reviews are pretty spot on. I never ran into any game-breaking bugs, had a great time playing the campaign, but the game-play itself is pretty underwhelming.

Pros:
Great story; really awesome plot twists and cut scenes
Looks incredible; the details are genuinely awesome
Extremely easy to respec your character
Endgame mechanics are pretty fun; i.e. building your town
Monsters; the creativity for monster types in this are really awesome and engaging to play against
Spells; using some of these skills genuinely makes you feel like a badass

Overall, it's a great casual ARPG that you can glide through a beautiful, interesting campaign in.

Cons:
Combat; I had hit recognition issues (in both on and offline), which meant I consistently couldn't generate resources to use spells
Animation locks; the amount of time I have to spam buttons, while my character is locked in some long spell casting animation is pretty annoying
Spells; while they're awesome to use, there are very limited selections, which are only available for specific weapon types and really hinders build creativity

So while the game looks awesome and you'll genuinely enjoy the campaign portion, really tough fights will be infuriating. Whether it's not being able to hit things to generate resources, being stuck in animations while you watch yourself die, or only have 3 solid skills you care about, while 1-2 others are haphazardly tacked on because they're the least bad options, the endgame can be pretty annoying.

If the devs can expand the spells pool or create some kind of overlap, that would solve a lot of my issues with character builds. If they can make my left-clicks reliably hit enemies, that would also fix a lot of my woes. I'm sure the animation locks are here to stay, but MAYBE having spells that can be cast at ANY time would be a healthy addition. Without changes like these, I can only really recommend picking up the game on sale and playing through the campaign, because it's definitely worth AT LEAST that.

Servers are down and apparently have been off and on for months, because EA refuses to address the issue of hackers exploiting their servers and preventing users from playing. Don't waste your time or money getting this.

Are there fun moments in this game? Sure. Is it better than the 2 games that lead to its creation? Sure. Is this a good game? Hell no.

Graphics: I am STILL confusing people for bushes. Also, why does it take so long for all these 24p jpeg textures to load?

Sound: The footsteps in the building next to me are louder than my own. Also, lightning is louder than god.

Performance: This game crashes at least once a day, never mind the issues with textures or falling through buildings when you're trying to land or the game locking up if you hit TAB too early into a game.

Gameplay: I can't jump over tiny rocks that a normal person can step over. I also unload 15 pistol rounds into a dude without any armor, but he kills me from 100 ft away with one shot from a shotgun, even though I have LVL 2 vest and helmet.

Community: I've never heard the N-word so many times in my life and I was born and raised in the south.

You would think with the HUGE player base this game has and how many people actually bought this, they would be able to fix some of these issues. Like, I don't know, maybe come up and implement a solid reporting system? Or optimize the game a little, so you don't need a beast machine to run something a smartphone should be able to handle?

Honestly, now that Fortnite has put out a Battle Royal mode, I can't think of a single reason to keep playing this game. Don't waste your money. Pay the same amount for Fortnite and get more content and game modes, with better developers, and a more enjoyable gameplay experience.

Story line is boring, voice acting is bad, mission development is lazy, development as a whole is pretty lazy with this game (aside from visual), there is no REAL incentive to go outside at night aside from being forced to by missions, free-running will kill you a LOT with no fault on your part, and the writing for all the missions (including side missions) seems to have been written by someone trying to portray everyone in a apocolyptic situation as either a whiny ♥♥♥♥♥ or ruthless dictator.

To sum up this game, all you need to do is play through the finale. No real spoilers here, just going to list off non-story related things (even though the end of the story is pretty unimpressive as well): you are forced to run back across the maps to get to the finale (because there is no fast-travel and going anywhere takes forever, ESPECIALLY this ridiculous run that they only make more difficult), once you get there you basically get entered into a giant platforming mini-game without the use of your grappling hook that you leveled for and have equipped, get introduced to a zombie that sprints at you and kills you on impact (which is the only one in the game and is positioned right around a corner that you have to die to discover and potentially die more to get past), more platforming that you just trial-and-error through by dying over and over, then once you get to the actual finale it's a quicktime-event cut scene (THE ONLY ONE IN THE GAME) with about 7 buttons that you just have to die over and over to memorize unless you have the reaction time of a 17 year old on crack. The end. No final battle or anything, just a huge, annoying, unecessary, anticlimactic, jump/die fest.

The only redeeming qaulity is running around in co-op and being absolute idiots with other people online. I would actually be 100000% down if that was all this game was, but with the weapon damage and the tiny trickle of money you get in the game, that's not really possible.

The versus mode is entertaining for the first couple rounds, but once the survivors realize to just stick together and have UV lights out constantly, it's almost impossible to beat them. Not really scary from the survivors point of view, mostly because it's pretty easy to win. I didn't even really get any enjoyment out of the wins because they felt like I was handed them on a golden platter.

In the end, Dying Light is not that great. I would actually put it on par with Dead Island (the team's last zombie game), ignoring all the hiccups and technical issues Dead Island ran into at launch. Add fast travel, an adventure mode that encourages running around and being stupid with friends (and no, the challenges aren't enough; potentially a survivor vs survivor mode?), tweak the free-running to make it more reliable, and give me a real reason to go out and die over and over in the night, then we'll talk about whether or not this game is worth getting. Deal?

Coded with a brick, frame drops like crazy, never saves your settings, maps are terribly designed, there's literally nothing that saves this game and makes it worth playing.

Incredibly too complex to the point where it's not enjoyable. For the first months (several of them) of playing this, you'll just be memorizing items and champions while you fail over and over for no reward other than finally being able to have fun in this free game. Too many small mechanics, too many items, it's just too much for anyone wanting to pick up a game and have a good time, because you have to know all of it to do good. Nevermind the fact that all of this is funneled into one game mode. There is a reason that League of Legends stomps this game and it's because they cut out all the useless crap this game has. Simple, clean, easy to comprehend, yet leaves room for creativity with the players and creates something truly skill based. Get LoL, not this over complicated mess.
