Helldivers 2 has been a game of ups and downs. Developer Arrowhead have made more than their fair share of blunders, squandering the massive amount of good will they generated at release and seeming to have no idea what they were doing. As of the 17.09.2024 patch, however, Arrowhead appear to have turned over a new leaf. They've shown themselves willing to listen to player feedback and word together with the community towards the kind of game we all want to play. Time will tell if this remains the norm, but it is a very good sign.

Helldivers 2 is a ton of fun, but this isn't news. It was always a ton of fun, even at its lowest points. Now, though, that feels intentional, rather than an exploit we the players found which will be patched out sooner or later. Now it feels like developer Arrowhead have finally found their footing, finally "found the game" amidst all the patching and balance changes. Now, I can finally dare hope that this game will actually improve over time. And that's a nice feeling.

This review is less about the objective qualities of the game - the graphics, the sound, the gameplay, etc. There's a lot to be said there, for sure, but I feel there are more important things. Helldivers 2 is a Live Service, a transient, ever-changing thing. What matters arguably far more than how the game is right now, is how the game will be a month, a year, a decade from now - if it lives that long. As of Tuesday (at time of writing), I have a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling about where Helldivers 2 is headed, and that's worth saying publicly.

In short, I can finally recommend buying and playing Helldivers 2. If Arrowhead maintain their current course, the game is headed for a bright future. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.
