Early Access Review
Despite the large amount of negative reviews, I can say that Starbound is one of the most enjoyable games I have played in recent years. I think too many people try to write this off as a Terraria or Edge of Space copy but it really is not. As a huge fan of other popular block-based sandbox games such as Terraria and Minecraft, I can say that this game, while not perfect, definitely has some unique features that add a new level of depth to the old "Build and Survive" formula. The gameplay is decent and the random-gen planets definitely add nice variety to the same boring single-world exploration found in similar games. While singleplayer is decent, you can't really get the full effect of the game unless you are playing with a friend. I bought the game when it was in Alpha and played it for awhile but quickly became bored trying to survive all alone. After the latest version came out, I have started playing it again and have realized how fun it can really be. By far, I have been most impressed with the artstyle, music and story. While the content of the game is growing, I would like to see advanced AI, bigger cities and a more in-depth story line. However, my biggest criticism of this game is its length. While it is a sandbox game with no end, there are simply not enough missions to do and the fun can run out quickly unless you are with a friend. Also, every time a major update is released your character data may be wiped. This is quite annoying, but it gives you a chance to start over and experience the new content. If you buy this game just be aware that it is an early access game and may have many bugs. Even if you buy Starbound and don't like it, always check back after the next major update with some friends and see what has changed. I recommend this game to anyone who is fan of sandbox games and I hope that it will only get better in the future.
