Nice.

Great sequel in every way.

Except the damn "Platinum Every Race" achievement. I'm not doing that. F that. These need 80% less race gates and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 90 degree blind turns can F right off as well. Designing your race segments to be as obnoxious as possible then tuning the time requirements to be damn near impossible is rude as hell. One more game to leave at 99% completion. Not worth it.

Unfortunately plagued by crashes. Performance wasn't bad the few minutes that I had it running, but with a limited window before a guaranteed refund, I can't be bothered to fight this game before I even get to play it. I'm on relatively fresh and powerful hardware that can run pretty much anything you want to throw at it. This game couldn't keep it up for more than 10 minutes at a time, if it managed get past the first loading screen at all.

I'll hold my breath with the dozens of other players in the game forums waiting for some kind of patch to get it fixed up, but they're not keeping my money in the meantime.

Good JRPG. I was skeptical at the auto-battle functionality at first, but it made grinding a lot more palatable when I can setup my tactics and let the game run itself. Higher difficulty just made for more spongy enemies, save yourself some headache and hours of your life, just play on a lower difficulty. There's no achievement difference.

I might even fire up a NG+ since I was a bit sleepy through some of the early story bits. They repeat themselves quite a bit though, so you'll catch up whether you like it or not. Certain characters have very specific motivations, and they make sure to keep hammering on those points later in the story. The love interests are all very peckish and shy, which makes sense for the kids, less for the older members of the party. The big bad guy at the end could have had more level design around them. The concept was cool, the execution felt a bit rushed. Didn't really see it coming either way, so not bad.

If you're going to 100% the game, most of it comes naturally. Make sure you're camping every hour to keep up with your group members. Make sure to check your ranch animals when they're ready. Those were the only real time gated issues. You'll want to keep track of your own fish when you start that part. You don't have to cook every food item, just collect the recipes, which is nice. You DO need to craft pretty much every possible weapon, so don't throw out your old weapons, they're used for upgrades. You can sell your armor as soon as you find something better. The ultimate group battle in the arena doesn't have a pre-requisite, but it'll probably be the last thing you do all powered up. I thought I blazed through it fast, and was about 20 seconds from failing it.

Combat, outside of auto-battles, isn't hard to catch on. It IS hard to get your team to use the skills you assign. Thankfully there's no achievements for getting their skills leveled up. Each member has three main skill types that level up, and they unlock additional skills. So the melee fighter has punch/kick/skill, the punch and kick level up naturally, but you'll need to set a tactic to make sure he actually uses his skills in the fights or he will ignore them. Lots of the aerial skills just don't go off naturally, I'm not sure if the AI just doesn't understand they can jump, or they explicitly need a knock-up skill first. For one of the MC's it's about half of their kit, never got that figured out, but they managed fine anyway.

All in all, as long as they keep ripping Denuvo out of these games, I'll keep buying them. I've got no patience for garbage DRM in my life, so it's nice when you get a game a year later that's fully patched and tested.

So the main game is maybe 50-60 hours. Then the endgame DLC grind is another... 70 hours or so.

I don't recommend trying to 100% the game. It's painful. I didn't really enjoy the last 30 hours of it. Still, overall, if I were to just put the game down after 80 hours, I would have been satisified. That's a lot of game, and it deserves to be recommended for it. I suspect most people will put it down long before the game gets really grindy.

There's a good amount of systems that could have used some polish. Inventory management is rough. One of the quests wants you to get an item that's really most common in the mid-30's, and if you miss your chance you'll have some real grind. Don't sell your stinky shoes. I spent probably 20 hours on my Steamdeck just letting the Kingdom grind up resources while mostly AFK, but that only really matters for the main game. Your kingdom has no grind factor in the end game DLC's which was a big miss for me.

Still, the game is many years past any updates, so there's no real sense in giving any constructive feedback, the devs have long since moved on to something else. It's a good game, lots of hours of play, lots of systems and a nice slow scaling pace that lets you invest in your characters, kingdom, and seek out every sidequest to keep up with the story.

Great bones on this game, but it's only about half baked. Looking forward to more getting fleshed out over the years to come.

For an open sandbox survival builder, it's got enough of the right stuff to keep you busy for a while, and plenty of hints to the future. There's some legitimately stunning vistas to discover and build on. I prefer to keep survival settings for food and drink active, but enemies are a bit tough for my liking, particularly when they swarm you later in the game. Base building is fairly intuitive, but pretty barebones on functional decorations. Darkness is real dark, even with the gamma boosted, and base lighting options are really quite weak.

Permanent companion death, not a big fan. They can get knocked down, you can pick them up or they'll eventually get up on their own. But they can also just get killed while down too. Would much rather see this turn into a captured mechanic where you have to go rescue them whether that's a camp or a cave.

There's very little narrative to the story outside of maybe a dozen voice lines and about 20 random documents to give you a vague idea of what you're doing. You could accidentally complete the game just by looking for more loot. The progression feels pretty weird as a result. Like a lot of the weapons and tools don't need to be gated behind so many points of story progression if they wanted to lean into the open world side. That's clearly the side they do a better job at. Also, the further along you get, the more aggressive the enemies become, or at least the variance can be increasingly overwhelming particularly if you're low on supplies.

Oh, and do yourself a favor. Once you can, give the girl your guns. You can always go grab replacements, and she's a better shot than you are.

Yeah there's definitely going to be some people dying on this little voyage. I'm about 3 hours in and ready to toss some fools overboard. You really need every available person, but are they all worth the space? Damn man, the choices are real.

I crawled through the desert with a broken leg. Ate my dog. Stole a stick and some shoes. Got captured by bandits until they got attacked by another group. In the chaos I ripped the prosthetic leg off one of the downed fighters, stole a bunch of other gear, and ran to the nearest town. Where I was arrested for looking too much like a slave. It took a couple escapes before I got away for good. Found a small town, started recruiting people from bars, and building up a squad. We roamed the lands taking bounties, hunting slavers and criminals, and eventually built a settlement of our own. Well, the locals didn't take kindly to that. Neither did the bandits. Or the military groups. In fact, no one really seems to take kindly to anything you do in Kenshi. There's a story to be had somewhere in the game, but it's mostly your own. What you do, discover, and piss off in the process.

10/10

Reinstalling 5 years later for one more round. Maybe Kenshi 2 will release before I die.

4 hours is a fair shake at any game, particularly for a rogue-lite that has you play the same stages on repeat until you have a deeply ingrained understanding of what to expect. Alas...

I don't understand the overwhelmingly positive reviews, this game just does not click with me. It's not particularly difficult, there's just a lot of egregious unfairness in the mechanics in combat and enemy design. It's not just unfairness, but the lacking consistency in mechanics that repeatedly disfavor the player who is already against all odds and enemies. Surely there's a less subtle difference between hard content and sadism.

The controls are not buttery smooth, they're clunky and grimy. You slide all over the place and feel like you're running through knee high jello. Animations sometimes stick to the direction you were facing, and sometimes move with you, which is inconsistent hell in a fast paced action game. Weapons flash with all kinds of different colors, they all have different reach, range, and speed which feel intentionally timed to either take one too many or one too few swings between potentially being hit by an enemy attack. The damage bonuses almost don't seem to matter at all, you're either scaling your weapons or you're falling behind the scaling HP of the enemies. Ranged weapons have an awkward reload mechanic that's inconsistent between them. Some you pick up your ammo, some regenerate on their own, some require melee kills, some don't use ammo at all and are only technically ranged. There's so much action and reaction in this game that you want to have, but simply isn't there or is obfuscated by jank controls. There's a built-in sense of urgency to move fast, but also to not get hit, but also enemies don't allow you to feel safe since they shoot through walls or fly through walls to explode, or just teleport on top of you.

Your jump and dash/roll are both barely there and anemic at best with talismans giving the option to jump mid-air multiple times, but not with any meaningful height or distance, nor do you really use it mechanically since the initial jump is so weak. It's more like you have an extra fart in mid air that stops you from falling momentarily. Not that it's enough to change direction or reach a slightly higher ledge, just enough to make you wonder why even bother having it as a modifier. Aside from basic enemies, you're the slowest thing on the screen at any given time, and getting hit means dropping your stage progression. Not to mention about 1/3rd of your HP. There's a stun for falling too high, in a platformer, which has a lot of vertical progression, even if it's nonsense. The blending of realism and jank make this feel arbitrary and add to that sadistic sheen. Fall in front of an enemy hard enough to get stunned and they'll hit you before you can react.

I can consistently reach and beat the first boss, but the hilarity of the bonus reward being "don't get hit" is pretty grinding. It's do-able, but either you're frame perfect after fighting him dozens of times, or find some weapon combination that makes him trivial to cheese. I haven't reached a second boss, and considering the mechanics of the first one, I'm not sure I want to. Where all the rest of the map has verticality and platforming, the boss has a flat stage with lightning walls. He's about a quarter of the screen, does an instant aoe that damages you in melee, and your anemic jump makes timing his ground slam obnoxious. While of course the boss can jump from one side of the screen to the other clipping you in the process if you happen to be in mid-air without a chance to really dodge.

Anyway, I've watched a handful of content creators play the game to varying levels of success over the years, this usually looks like the kind of thing I'd be down with. Mark of the Ninja was similar and I totally vibed with that. I figured after many years in EA I would finally give this a shot on sale, and while i'm not going to return it, I have no plans to properly finish it. Maybe I'll start slapping on some mods and ignore the achievements. Maybe I'll change the review in 20 hours to self denigrate my whining as git gud noob status for a game that's actually a hidden gem. Surely 100k reviews couldn't be wrong could they?

Wouldn't recommend unless I wanted to hurt someone.

This is the best indie game I've played in 2022. What a pleasant experience. No voice acting, good chill music, and a classic RPG that isn't afraid to kill a couple kids and hang bodies from the walls. There's a single almost romantic encounter that's shut down because hey man, the world is kind of ending. Priorities. This really ticked my exploration and completionist boxes without having to hold my hand. If you go looking in nooks and crannies, you're probably going to end up finding things.

The bounty board, looks like a massive chessboard menu, is a great way to lead players to things they might have missed, and you see a lot more of it than you can accomplish right away, which leaves you wanting to come back later. I'm closing in on 50 hours to wrap up a pretty thorough playthrough. Hasn't felt grindy or badly paced unless I was the one slowing down to take in the sights. The story has a great sense of urgency and tempo, so I can definitely see how people might finish it in 30 hours if they blaze through it, but man. Take your time. Games are meant to be played.
