I was pretty excited to try out this game, but it turned out to be horrible. Honestly, it's probably the worst game in my library right now.

I barely got through the beginning of the first map before I was completely bored and super frustrated. I retried multiple time but the game didn't cooperate. The game simply doesn't want you to move forward. The mechanics of this game are flawed so it's totally RNG whether you'll be able to proceed or not.

Controls are so bad. Good luck trying to parry anything when it's impossible to get the timing right because of how unresponsive they are.

Long story short, the controls make the game unplayable. I'm genuinely puzzled about why anyone thought this was ready to be released. At least I only spent 3 euros on this, but honestly, I still can’t figure out why this game exists and why positive reviews exist.

Rating: 0/10 – I can't even play it.

This is basically Saints Row: The Third with 3 times more bugs. I don't need to say anything else.

Disappointing. Mouse Fix included below this review
When I sat down to try this game, I genuinely hoped to have a different experience than the one I had. I tried, I really did, to find reasons to give this a positive review. Unfortunately, there are far too many downsides to overlook.

First, let's talk about the patches. The developers have rolled out several updates, and yet, the issues persist. It feels like little progress has been made towards improving the game, but that's still truly disappointing.

One of my major grievances is the game's optimization. Running it on a system with a 4070 SUPER, i7-14700K, and 6000 MHz dual-channel DDR5 memory grants expectations of smooth sailing. Instead, I find myself sitting through frame drops below 90 fps during intense scenes. This level of performance on such a setup is unacceptable.

The stuttering and microstuttering are particularly infuriating. My setup should handle this game with ease, yet these performance hitches are all too frequent. At times, it feels like the game is waging a war against my system.

Moreover, there are frustrating moments when shots simply don't register. You line up your sights, take the shot, and nothing happens. It's infuriatingly common and detracts significantly from the overall experience.

My personal gripe is how drastically the game has deviated from the original Ion Fury. As a fan of the older title, this departure feels unjustifiable and unwelcome. It lacks the charm and appeal that drew me in initially.

The gameplay itself is tedious. Shooting, which is supposed to be the main attraction, feels poorly executed. It's bland and lacks the engagement and excitement that a player seeks in a game centered primarily around shooting mechanics.

Lastly, let's discuss the elephant in the room: mouse smoothing and deceleration. Even after numerous patches, this issue still lingers. It's bewildering that a problem easily fixed through a few lines in the ini file remains unsolved by the developers.

In conclusion, while I sincerely wanted to appreciate this game, the combination of unresolved technical issues and gameplay missteps makes it difficult to recommend. For those still interested, I've included a temporary fix for the mouse input issues below.

4/10.

Mouse Fix
Navigate through "%localappdata%\Phoenix\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor" and open "Input.ini" using your favorite text editor.
Add the following entries below "[/script/engine.inputsettings]":
bEnableMouseSmoothing=False bUseMouseAbsolute=False bViewportsPreferGameMouseCapture=True bEnableMouseOverEvents=True bEnableClickEvents=True bUseRawInput=True bViewAccelerationEnabled=False
Note: "bEnableMouseSmoothing=False" might already exist, in that case there's no need to add it again.
Save the file and launch the game.

Extremely good concept, poorly implemented

How to fix the stutters (NVIDIA / Windows only)
The user shouldn't manually perform these steps to fix the game. First, uncap the framerate via PCGamingWiki method. Set NVIDIA's low latency mode to Ultra and cap fps to 1000 in the NVIDIA control panel, this will trigger NVIDIA's Reflex framerate limiter method, which will flatten frametimes thus making the game playable.

I do not have a fix for neither Linux or AMD
Unfortunately, I couldn't fix the stuttermess there, I'm sorry.

Review
Again, the user shouldn't manually tamper with the system in order to get the game to work properly, so there's my review.

This is an extremely good concept, but it's very poorly implemented. The game brings back an awesome revolutionary style of gameplay that really stands out. However, the execution falls short of its potential.

Too many technical issues, I cannot get around this
  • I had to go through some troubleshooting to make this game work decently. This game is recent, so this cannot be justified.
  • The game still visual lags on a beast of a computer (i7-14700K, RTX 4070 SUPER). Despite getting 200 fps all the time, it doesn't feel like 200 fps at all; rather, it feels like 45 to 75 fps on my 240 Hz monitor.

Poor controls
  • Dodging doesn’t work sometimes, even when timed perfectly.
  • There's a slight delay with parkour and controls in general, but that's not a huge issue compared to other problems.

The game is an extremely remarkable and amazing idea that FAILS due to its issues
If not for these significant flaws, I would definitely finish this game multiple times. The game would be addicting if everything worked properly. The poor implementation compromises the experience, leading to a disappointing 4/10 rating from me, despite its amazing concept.

In conclusion, it's a shame that such a good concept has been so poorly implemented, this is a massive lost potential of a game. With smooth performance and responsive controls, this game could easily be considered a masterpiece, scoring between 8/10 to 8.5/10. But, unfortunately, this is not the case.

4/10.

Absolutely wonderful

Very few titles manage to seamlessly blend the absurd with genuine uninterrupted fun, and this game is definitely one of those rare gems. Reintroducing us to a universe filled with colorful chaos and audacious humor, this game is extremely fun to play, standing out as a testament to what made the original so beloved among fans while adding some refreshing tweaks that elevate the experience.

At the heart of its appeal is a meticulously crafted gameplay loop that never ceases to entertain. The controls are extremely responsive, allowing players to execute moves with precision and ensuring that every combat encounter is as satisfying as it is chaotic. Whether you're slicing through hordes of zombies or exploring the whimsically dark world, the seamless control mechanics guarantee an immersive experience.

A particularly commendable aspect of the game is its unapologetically uncensored approach. This decision not only preserves the original spirit of the game but also amplifies its outlandishly humorous atmosphere, providing a more authentic experience to fans who appreciate the game’s unique style. However, while the uncensored mode offers full-throttle fun, there is a slight hiccup: the subtitles occasionally don't match the dialogue. While not a deal-breaker, it can momentarily pull you out of the moment.

Graphically, the game is a vivid spectacle, but it does suffer from some technical blemishes. Running on a 4070 SUPER, the framerate should soar effortlessly; however, it surprisingly falters, occasionally dipping too low for the comfort one would expect with such hardware. This inconsistency, although sporadic, is noticeable and may detract slightly from an otherwise smooth experience.

Another side note, there's a lack of native support for the DualSense controller (it claims it supports it, though?). You can still use Steam Input to emulate a Xbox controller

Despite these few footnotes, this game definitely emerges triumphant as an incredibly enjoyable game that's hard not to love. Its combination of humor, style, and impeccable mechanics ensures that players will not only relish in the nostalgia but also in the fresh layers added to the classic experience. If you're ready to embrace the zany world once more, or for the first time, you're in for a remarkably fun ride.

Vote: 9/10.

I've been having fun so far, no stutters, no performance issues, the gameplay is fun and I like the game in general. I've been playing from Arch Linux with zero problems. I'll update my review if I need to add more details.

You can use this in Input.ini (create it under %localappdata%\M1\Saved\Config\Windows) to use raw mouse input, which allows you to play with 8khz polling rate without issues:
[/script/engine.inputsettings] bUseMouseForTouch=False bEnableMouseSmoothing=False bUseMouseIndependentFOV=True bUseAbsoluteDeltas=False bCaptureMouseOnLaunch=True MouseAcceleration=0.0 RawMouseInput=True

Play this on Linux
It's impossible to play this on Windows 11 even after trying every single possible solution. The game simply crashes with 0xc0000005 exception code.

Still, it would be unfair to blame the game, which is from 1999, for something that Microsoft broke, which is backward compatibility. This is Microsoft's responsibility and I don't blame the game at all.

This said, this is actually a good game, play it on Linux or on old Windows operating systems.

It's refreshing to play Quake II again with uncapped framerate. You have to use D3D11 in Windows to avoid very slight input lag caused by Vulkan (if you're on Linux, Vulkan will be snappy instead).

If you want to directly host a game with a client-server connection (without lobbies), you can do that by opening a LAN match and then letting your friend connect using "connect IP" from the game console. Replace IP with your public address. The inbound port you need to forward is 5069 UDP.

This game gets an easy 9.5/10.

Smooth game, smooth gameplay, smooth and snappy controls. The game is fun to play, doesn't get boring so far, I also haven't ever experienced problems or crashes at all. The story is also interesting, as well as the narration. I can give this game a solid 8/10, I would give 9/10 if there was no need to cap fps to 60.

Sure, this game might have a few problems, but when it comes to platforming, it's pretty much the best you can get.

Let's realize that a lot of other platformer games out there have super frustrating controls, like when you're trying to jump in those games they often don't listen, and the characters often don't move to the right direction, decide to ignore your commands or perform them with a delay

I've recently tried a few other platformers and, let me tell you, the controls were a total nightmare in most of them. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all other platformers are a disaster. I'm just saying that this game, despite its little problems, really makes you value the good stuff. It's a solid 9/10.
