DRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age™
Review Showcase
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a good rat-smashing coop game

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a coop game that in some ways similar to the more famous Left 4 Dead series: the players control a group of survivors warriors and mages and fight against huge hordes of zombies skavens (basically grown rats) and northlanders (humans touched by the dark magic) in various missions.

The gameplay is the main selling point of the game and, honestly, it's quite awesome. The combat feels expecially real and was implemented really well. In Vermintide the main weapons are melee, so you'll use tons of swords, spears, hammers and flails. The weapons usually cut easily through the unarmored enemies but when you hit armours or shields, the feeling of hitting something hard is just right. The combat mechanics are pretty simple, but going up with the difficulty you'll understand that there is actually a lot to learn in order to survive. Generally speaking, the game has a good variety: the are tons of different enemies (each covering a different role), some huge monsters you can find mid-mission, five different classes with three specializations each (for a total of 15) and a three-act campaign, with each act being composed of four missions plus a final-story one.Honestly though, if feel that they could've had more variety between them. You can replay every mission on four different difficulties (plus you can make them harder by collecting grimoires while playing, reducing the max life total and getting more rewards). Every class has three specialization and each specialization has a unique active and passive ability in addition to an unique talent table, effectively changing the way you play with each one. Unfortunately not all specializations are equals and some are way better than others, but most are still very fun to play with.

Graphics are really good and both environments and enemies/characters got reproduced really well in the game, expecially the skavens that are basically the same as in the boardgame. Obviously during hordes the framerate can drop due to the copious amount of fur that overwhelm the screen and that isn't the only problem: the game tends to look a little bit blurry when focusing on stuff that is not too near to the character. I believe that missions could've been a lot more cinematic, expecially in the end. For example: there's a mission where you blow up an altar. It could've been incredible, but the explosion is so small that it doesn't destroy anything. A big explosion during the party escape would've been a lot better.

The game is certainly not bug-free and there are actually a lot of disconnection problems due to the lack of dedicated server. Thus, it happends that you get kicked out from the game "disconnection" reasons (even if you are still online) or that the host migrates and everything bugs out. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal but losing 20-30 minutes of mission is not incredibly fun. Also, this is something that was present from day1 and was never fixed.

Summarizing, I'll say that Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a great game with some problems that will likely never be fixed. I'll still recommend the game to whoever knows and likes the Warhammer fantasy universe and to those who like this type of gameplay, because it's one of the best Warhammer fantasy games out there.
