Gameplay wise, there is some luck involved, but once you get to know the enemies, cards and the possible encounters, the luck portion loses a lot of weight, which is really rewarding. On each level there is a pool of enemies which you can encounter. My only problem with this game is that in the difficulty in the enemy pool can vary greatly.
