5.0 / 5.0

This is remaster of the 2002 Nintendo Gamecube remake of the 1996 PlayStation original game. But in reality, all you need to know is that this is a genre-defining awesome survival horror game worth your money.

While this game may feel a bit archaic in terms of controls and use of fixed-camera angles, these features make this game unique and up the level of tension all while adding to the overall eerie atmosphere courtesy of the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds. The fact that this game still looks great after all these years is a testament on how well the game was remade. Replay value is high since you can play the game with two characters with slight differences in their stories and progression, as well as a number of unlockables and challenging achievements.

Do note that this Steam version has some flaws. I noticed subtitles are usually not synched with the speed of the voice acting and that the "second disc" content (laboratory final area) has severe audio lag in the cutscenes. Maybe these problems were unique to my rig but thought they needed to be mentioned.

Despite these issues this game still retains a masterpiece label in my book and it's a must have for any survival horror fan out there.
