90% of the negative reviews are either in reference to early server issues that are now fixed, or that this game is similar in nature to ARK. While this game's main game play cycle is very similar to ark, the backed server stuff is very different and would not have been able to be done as a dlc. It is fun to play. If you liked ark you will probably like this. The sailing is just in depth to be interesting yet shallow enough anyone can get into it. The PVE melee combat could use a bit of work, I feel like I'm fighting the controls sometimes against the treasure guards, and you can't turn off target magnetism when you block. Gun play is great, I walk around with a rifle and 6 flintlock pistols because the game has a hotkey to switch to the next available loaded pistol and it feels great to just crank out tons of damage.

The game is pretty well optimized and I run around 60 – 80 frames all the time, though on very rare occasion I'll dip down to 5 for a brief instant when the game loads something but this has happened maybe twice in 36 hours of play. The transition between map sections is a 2-5 second hitch for me (i have the game on a m.2 ssd) but has been upwards of 10 seconds for some of my friends, so I wouldn't quite call it seamless, but its not a minute long load time. I play in a 720p window so I can watch youtube/tv, and as a result of this there is some text that is impossible to read, but its just buff/debuff text. The menus are 100% readable.

If you have a few friends you can probably hit the end of the tech progression with in a week or two, but there's more to do than just that. The treasure hunting is pretty fun, and there's ship to ship combat but me and my friends haven't tried that quite yet.
