Overall Review:
difficulty: UV
chainsaw weak demons for ammo, thank me later.

100% worth buying on sale, not worth the full price IMO. The combat system is very unique and you have to spend time learning it, rather than most FPS games where if your fundamental mechanics are already good, there's no need for learning.

After 6 hours of game time I finally started to feel more comfortable with the combat mechanics and the game became enjoyable. Until then, it was a grind and I didn't like it.

My initial thoughts playing this game:

The combat in this game is overwhelming, too many abilities that remove the intuitiveness of what DOOM is supposed to be.

Why couldn't they just create a new franchise with this new combat system. It feels like I'm trying to 360 tre flip FS rail grind manualing while holding my ballsack on my chin.

This is like the pro skater of doom games. It feels like an RPG game to me, there's just so much going on. Why can't I melee kill weak demons to get my health back, I have to waste 1 bullet to get a glory kill? Really?

Why do I have to grenade cacodemons when their mouth is open or else I'm just emptying mag after mag and shell after shell, then realizing I have no ammo and that I should've chainsawed the cacodemon. Die, respawn, shoot the grenade and it misses, then wasting all of my ammo and then die to an imp because I should've double dashed and jumped with no ammo because I wasted it all and had to hunt the map for ammo.. I just don't get it, where did they go wrong?

mechanically horrible, the rest is great.

Afterthoughts:

combat:

The problem that I had with the combat is that it requires FPS players to learn these new mechanics, rather than allowing FPS players that have already mastered fundamental mechanics to thrive.

Everybody learns at different paces. For me it took 6/7 hours to finally feel somewhat comfortable and not overwhelmed by the amount of mechanics this game has.

It took me half the game to finally realize that using a chainsaw on weak demons drops significant ammo and by doing so prevents the issue of not having any ammo throughout the levels. It was also at this time in the game that I maxed out the heavy rifle and the game finally felt more manageable.

The dash mechanic:

The entire game requires you to jump and dash throughout most fights and I disliked the dash mechanic. It never felt like it fit in the game in my opinion. If instead we had skill based idtech strafing just like quake, I'd be really happy with that. But shifting through demons waiting for the sound queue to do it again.. I just really disliked it. It never felt satisfying to me and the game forces you to do it due to the way demons are programmed. (if you don't dash, you will get hit because your movement speed is always slower than all of the demons in this game)

Demon weak points:

Every demon in doom games have specific weaknesses like super shotgunning pinkys or plasma gunning revenants in doom 2.

This style of shooting, which is to focus on specific parts of a demon is unique to this game. At first, well really for the first half of the game, I hated it. Blowing up Mancubus's rockets and Rev rockets were annoying to me. I can respect the change they made. Personally I just prefer the older style of DOOM and the way the demons work in those games.

Initially The grenade mechanic on cacodemons really concerned me, as you learn this weak point at the start of the game and in my mind all I was thinking: So.. every demon that I fight is going to have some weak point that I have to focus on?

This made me really overwhelmed for awhile until I realized that this grenade mechanic is unique only to cacodemons. (thank god)

Movement issues:

Just like doom 2016 holding left/right directional keys while running forward lowers your movement speed... why...
e.g W+D, W+A. this encourages dashing or holding W only and that is some noob ♥♥♥♥.

Optimization:

This game ran flawlessly on my system, easily reaching 250fps stable. Really well done.

Graphics:
Incredible, just like DOOM 2016. The glory kills are insanely well made, the art design of this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane.

Music:
Personally I liked DOOM 2016's soundtrack compared to this. But still a great soundtrack.
