A detective adventure based around environmental puzzles and quirky characters.

Ghost Trick sees you take control of a recently deceased person who reawakens as a ghost and is given one night to solve their own murder. As a ghost, you reside in objects, jumping between nearby ones in order to move around. You can also use "tricks" on these objects - causing them to move or activating electronics. Lastly, you're given the ability to speak to other dead people's ghosts - giving you the opportunity to find out more about the events surrounding your death and enabling you to jump back in time in order to prevent their death.

Ghost Trick's main gameplay sees you solving puzzles by manipulating your environment in various ways in order to move through levels and alter events. The most common and most elaborate puzzles see going back in time and altering events in order to save another person related to the events surrounding your murder from dying. You'll have to figure out the functions of the various objects available to you, then combine them in the right order and with the right timing to cause chain-reactions benefitting you. These puzzles strike a good balance, being easy enough to figure out on your own while still posing a challenge which may require a couple of retries to fully figure out. They're also wonderfully integrated into the environments - with all objects feeling like they belong in their place and interactions making logical sense.

Breaking up the puzzle sections are conversations, accessed either by talking to other deceased people or through listening in on the living. These dialogues are very well written, with a variety of quirky yet genuine feeling characters, well executed intrigue and a good sense of humour. They go on maybe a tad too long but are otherwise well paced, with the alternation between talking and puzzling feeling similarly well executed pacing-wise.

Told through this gameplay is a compelling story, which starts out as a rather benign murder investigation, but soon expands into an extensive web of mysteries. More and more questions as to what happened in the night of your death as well as the time preceding it begin to pop up, with reveals often leaving you with a wholly new perspective on previous events and more questions than you had before. The way things are built up and resolved is wonderful and still makes it hard for me to put the game down even on repeat playthroughs.

This version of Ghost Trick brings with it some notable upgrades to the original handheld release, most notably the high-resolution graphics. While not being quite as charming as the original pixilated style in my opinion, they certainly look great and retain the game's beautiful art style along with the slick, stylized animations. The soundtrack was also rearranged and sounds wonderful, with the memorable tracks helping to set a perfectly fitting atmosphere throughout the game. You can even switch back to the original versions of the tracks at any point.

As you progress through the game, you'll unlock various artwork as well as music tracks (both their old and new versions) which you can access through the menu. You're also given a bunch of backgrounds to customize the area used to expand the game's 4 by 3 aspect ratio during gameplay, which I found to be a lovely touch. There are also some optional sliding puzzle mini games unlocked after beating the game, which are rather benign but are presented in quite a neat way, making for a nice addition nonetheless. I was also happy to see that the phone book notes detailing Sissel's thoughts on all the characters and location he encounters are made available through the menu after beating the game, letting you view all variations tied to story progress.

I wholeheartedly recommend you buy Ghost Trick. It tells an amazing story, challenges you with fun puzzles and has been one of my favourite games ever since I played the original, which this port does justice.

Note: I was very happy to find that Ghost Trick allows you to change the icons displayed when playing with a controller, allowing you to seamlessly use various controllers through Steam Input.
