Terminator is my favourite movie ever, I prefer 'T2: Judgement Day' over the original but as a duo, they are perfect cinematic masterpieces. The Hollywood bastardisation sequels after T2 did NOT happen in my eyes and I am sure most fans would agree with that too. So, when I saw the developers shared this mindset as well, I was very curious to say the least.

As many other reviewers have put it, the developers' track record is not exactly amazing (see Rambo: The Video Game) so when this game first appeared publicly, it was met with mixed reception due to who was making the game aaaand the trailer did not show all that much to wow people. The only thing the trailer had going for it was it advertised James Cameron's 'Future War' era from the original duo films in glorious old action movie fashion, which in my opinion, the developers knew what reaction this would bring - the fans, including myself, having longed for a movie set entirely within this premise for more than a decade now only to be greeted with - to be blunt - abysmal cash-grab sequels (and whatever Terminator: GenisyYys was suppose to be) as time went forward after T2. But I don't think we expected a video game to just pop out of nowhere - and yeah, it did literally pop out of nowhere, the developers spent like $10 on marketing it seems because this project seriously flew under the radar for the most part leading up to its release.

Well, the game is out and is it good? Yes. Yes it is. I went into the game with mediocre expectations honestly because of the aforementioned reasons but the more I played, the more interested I became. The story won't be spoiled but I would actually recommend watching T1 and T2 before playing this game as it is clear this game is a total passion project for the fans of the original films. I've watched the films so many times, I'm a total loser, so I caught on to most (if not all) nods and throwbacks made. I believe this enhanced my playing experience because I caught on to every reference, every nod, every throwback to the first two films this game passionately makes. From the obvious, to the small details you are guaranteed to miss if you haven't watched the films in a while.

Gameplay wise, it appears to have copied many elements from popular post-apocalyptic games such as the Fallout series. Featuring a lockpicking system that is straight out of Bethesda Fallout titles, a hacking mini-game to snatch more loot on the field and a crafting system which is not exactly in-depth but it does keep you motivated to find those extra resources out in the field in the early sections of the game. The gunplay I would like to describe as being similar to 'Fallout: New Vegas'. It's pretty average, it won't keep you staring in awe as you blast "THOSE TINCANS" away but it does fall into place and work as intended. The weapon variety ramps up as you progress through the game, and without spoiling too much, it gets really '80s and turns into a visual-fest, featuring lots of pewpew-plasma rounds, you'd think SKYNET was subtly supporting the LGBT+ movement with the rainbow colours they slap onto their plasma weaponry.

The story to the game is pretty great in my opinion, it starts off fairly slow and takes quite a while to properly take off. The game features the obvious main story and many side-quests to complete in your travels, as well as featuring several hub-esque locations for downtime outside of the bombastic action. The characters you hang around with each serve a purpose and their eventual fates are entirely decided by you via your actions throughout the story. The main characters are not exactly emotionally in-depth (the voice acting is a bit meh honestly, but it does the job well enough) some of the voice acting actually reminds me of material you'd maybe hear in low-budget sci-fi movies from the '80s and '90s. Is that a compliment? I think it rubs off well when put like that - but maybe I'm being TOO positive in this case. As I said however, for the sake of the story, everyone provides equally well with their voices.

The game features all the classic Terminator enemies we all know and love, featuring the classic T-800s that come in colourful variants which are all equally annoying and dangerous (respect to the developers for featuring the option to disable T-800s with a close-range shotgun attack, giving love to T1) to the Hunter-Killer Aerial units that patrol the nuclear night skies and the hulking HK-Tanks that roam the skull littered fields of 2029 Los Angeles. The game also features new SKYNET attack robots which are not as advanced as their humanoid terminator units but still equally deadly. These unit types are creative and do give a scale of variety SKYNET has at its disposal and their determination to destroy pesky humanity.

As I said, I would highly recommend watching 'The Terminator' and 'T2: Judgement Day' before playing this game to fully catch all the small and obvious references and throwbacks made throughout the game. It will really make you appreciate the game more. I also recommend playing this game with 0% gamma/brightness. I feel not being able to see a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing really immerses you more in the war-torn 2029 L.A.

On a final note, that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ finale man. To put simply, it's AMAZING. The story wraps up so perfectly, the events leading up to an epic finale - It SMASHES all the right notes, all the elements fall right into place. I have profound respect for the developers for what they pulled off. Despite the flaws, money well spent. Superb work. What a comeback for this little studio.

I'd also recommend checking out 'GmanLives' review of this game if you are really interested in the GOOD and BAD points about this game and curious if you should really spend your money - he explains himself pretty well. This review is just me rambling about how much I love Terminator honestly, lel.

"There is really no place in this enterprise for a rogue physicist."

This game, being a decade classic, still excels in the departments of character interaction, intriguing dialogue and voice work.

To this day, this game is still really enjoyable to boot up and just play countless times, I am still shocked that there are people still out there that have not played this game. Let alone not have it in their library.

10/10 - Your hour has come again.
