tl:dr this is a good game, just not a good dragon age game

i wish there was an "in between" option. i hate picking "not recommended" but, first off, i have been a dragon age fan since origins, its my favorite fantasy game series of all time, and it is very near and dear to my heart. dragon age origins and 2 are my favorites, but i went into the game not expecting it to be those games. the game is beautiful, the cinematics are amazing, the character creator is the best i've seen, the companions are generally likeable , the attention to factions and race dialogue is awesome, and the gameplay is very fun.
however, getting rid of the keep was the worst thing they did. this game feels incredibly disconnected from dragon age. they've also "toned down" the dark fantasy aspect we all know and love, no complex racial or class dialogue from others (such as being an elf or a mage), and there's no option to pick between city elf or dalish elf, and no mention of the circle, templars, slaves, alienages, apostates, anything. it feels very tone deaf to just erase all of that in favor of a more "friendly" thedas, when that has never been the case. i'm desperate to know what's happened to my heroes past and their companions, even the inquisitor doesnt really say anything, even about the chosen romance option. this game feels the need to have an "explaination" for every dragon age "mystery" (the blight, the elven gods, the wardens, the maker) and it's a really bad explanation half the time. the writing (especially at the beginning) is very "disney channel" and it really gets on your nerves after a while. the rook romances are INCREDIBLY lackluster, when you flirt, the characters barely reciprocate and theres only a couple scenes near the end of the game dedicated to your romance, and i've heard some romances barely even get a kiss. im very disappointed, dragon age 2 had awesome romances, and that game was rushed within a year, this had *10* years, and we get some of the most lackluster video game romances ive ever seen. and throwing the lore and terminology, as well as our storylines *we* the players made ourselves, through playing the previous 3 games, out the window was a kick in the face. im disappointed, but im enjoying the game regardless, its fun, its good, its pretty, but its not what i waited 10 years for. i hope bioware does better next time, brings back the keep, and listens to complaints about this game. (and not the reviewbombing chuds who havent played more than an hour or not at all) it feels like a pure betrayal that they've thrown out what we built ourselves over the past 15 years.
