You can cheese him easy, Go to the left of one of the sets of stairs and sit next to the staircase on the ledge, and now block, he'll attempt to drop down and plunge attack you, but will proceed to bounce off your head and off the edge, ez 2k souls, save and reload and his items will appear where he stood.

You should have chosen the honorable apraoch ;) jump on the tree and turn the "master samurai" into a hedgehog
