Dwarf Fortress is the uncontested champion of emergent gameplay. The character cap on this text box isn't nearly enough to tell even one of the fantastic stories that the game helps tell. I know many are scared off by the extreme learning curve required to even begin striking the earth, but every hour of tutorial you endure will return hundreds of hours of gameplay. The only way to truly understand the scope of this game is to play it.

And yes, the narrative of Red Dead Redemption and its prequel are absolutely mind-blowing. The West is the greatest story America has to tell, and RDR is the greatest story the West has to tell - better even than anything Clint Eastwood or John Wayne has to offer. The characters, the gameplay, the story... everything is so finely crafted that it is certainly gaming's most artistic masterpiece. And certainly no story has ever broken my heart in the way it has.

System Shock set a standard that games have been trying to emulate for decades. Every great story-driven FPS from System Shock 2 to Deus Ex to Bioshock to Half Life to Prey was influenced directly by the very first game to carry the title. The game was truly ahead of its time in many ways - 3D look, multiple stances, weapon choice, and environmental storytelling would not be seen again for years or even decades. And SHODAN was and still continues to be the most unforgettable antagonist in gaming (overshadowed, perhaps, by another rogue AI heavily inspired by our Machine-Mother, GLaDOS).

And, of course, Minecraft needs no introduction.
