This game big stupid dumb. It's one of my favorites. I can really recommend it if you like stuff that's "so bad it's good" as the story and aesthetics of the game are all over the place.

The fans are right that it's inferior to the mainline Devil May Cry series in terms of gameplay, but it does have some interesting ideas that made it into the fifth game. The arsenal is nice, pacing is great (although lacking a turbo mode), and I personally love the grappling mechanic used for pulling around enemies plus navigating the environment.

The story is based on the idea that the world is controlled through debt (anybody ever read the Death Grips book?) but it's demons who are the central bankers. There's a lot of cool schizo parallels between real world conspiracies and demonology. The writing and dialogue that carries all the cool ideas in the story is awful, laughably bad, and sometimes astoundingly confident in how cool it thinks it is.

The aesthetics in this game are also messy. The level design is mostly linear with some neat gimmicks here and there. The way the environments themselves are designed are very dreamlike and fun to navigate; they're not all perfect but there were a few I felt like I could get lost in just for fun. There's very hit and miss costume design. Donte's fit is pretty cool, but longcoat Vorgil with a hat that looks too small for his head(?) The music in this game is also pretty mid. I like the soundtrack as a guilty pleasure but I mostly listened to my own music to this game (fast paced metal, punk, noise music reccomended).

TW: Here's a paragraph about the fetus boss fight. It's my favorite part of the game. How the heck did this make it into the game. You straight up beat a demon fetus to death while it's still attached to it's mother. I personally found it hilariously edgy. The way it's handled is messy though, because they wanted Donte to seem like a "good guy" even though he's more of a "antihero." Vorgil ends up aborting the kid with via shooting the mother in the stomach (because kind of spoiler: he da REAL BAD GUY). Even with all the run around, I still remember it as "the abortion boss fight in DmC, oh yeah that was a thing."

Overall this game is very flawed. It's reputation of being the worst game in the series is kind of deserved. If you can accept it for what it is as a failed spin-off of the series, you might find a lot to enjoy.
