It's addicting and fun. I would recommend it to my friends who are patient. But that's just the problem, the games design expects you to shrug off everything as 'thats just rain world!'. But who likes redoing the same section 10 loops in a row because those 3 miros birds are sitting literally on top of the only path forward and refuse to move for half a cycle? Or the ol' reliable, enemies off screen being able to see you when you have no idea where they are because, well, they are off screen. Or why are neuron flies, an important quest/plot item, transparent in water? Or why do I have to watch the same exact animation every time I spawn, why do I need to watch every karma gate open when minutes matter? I got so tired of watching the same ♥♥♥♥ over and over I downloaded cheat engine just to speedhack the karma gates and shelter openings (x10 makes them last seconds BTW). That all said, somehow just playing the game and surviving in it is very fun as even when you die you'll make some progress or maybe find a new route.

But the more you play the more you realize that the game has just so many flaws. Making a list is lame so I will instead say it's one of those games you can't help but love as it's just fun by design but so, so, so frustrating due to bizarre game design choices.

Do not buy this game for the lore unless you like weirdly open ended games. This game's story can be summarized with the sentence "you draw the lines and conclusions". You never get any real answers because they really wanted to hammer home both the idea that you're to small to understand what the purpose of all the locations and machinery is as well as it's up to you to draw conclusions. But they then contradict this by inserting unlockable journal entries into the game and going on Twitch and talking about how something random is plot relevant (like the shapes of leviathans) which only makes this game's story even MORE confusing. If all you want is to know the story just google it. However, having first watched someone explore on Youtube and then explored the game myself, it's definitely an experience that's somehow fun and unforgettable.

Early Access Review
Good game but has a lot of unrealized potential and the devs have slowed way down. It's one of those classics that the devs havent really been modernizing and is still fun but shows its age. It's sorely in need of a spiritual successor but until then it's very fun as a sandbox zombie survival game. Just don't expect a whole lot and you'll spend hours just exploring, building your character, and looting. Well worth it in its current form.

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

If you played and enjoyed any far cry game before this, you will probably think this one is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. In short they ditched the linear story for one that can be done in any order, which is so clearly not Far cry's strongsuit. There's three sub regions and you do some typically crappy main quest where they show case their spooky gimmick that makes each of the 3 region-bosses kinda (not really) interesting.

Far cry isn't really known for its good mind twists and they tried way too hard with one of them, the other is a mind control drug and the last one is the tutorial zone where the guys has no gimmick (that I remember) and more of a man hunt instead. They are all separate from each other (they couldnt be otherwise since each as entirely separate progress) and as a result it feels more like you're playing a bunch of separate dlc story lines or something.

In my opinion far cry was fun because you were doing some semi-coherent main quest with guns and explosives. They sort of ditched the old buy-a-gun-then-upgrade system for some sort of weird store mixed with the microtransaction storefront. It makes it feel like some dinky mmo where you buy skins off a cash shop.

The ending was terrible too. Far cry isn't really known for its endings either but this one just screams edgy (more so than normal for far cry) nihilism without any spoilers. For reference the only ending where you actually come out on top is a joke ending at the beginning of the game. So if you wanted something to make the main quest worth it, this isn't it.

Overall just get Far cry 4. It's cheaper, will run better, look just as good and won't make you suffer through whatever it is they are attempting to do to the franchise. You still get co-op, not one but TWO coherent stories (referring to the main quest and the tapestry quest), the cute little gyrocopters for flight, and more interaction with the fun recurring characters outside a pointlessly short side quest such as in Far cry 5.
