You have heard about the narrative, but was the fighting ditched?
The quickest answer is no. The game-play is also an integral part of the game. Gaming history shows such combination isn`t new and to name a few, HellBlade is a new addition to the golden hall of fame.

- The Last of Us
- Resident Evil 2
- Heavy Rain
- Mass Effect 2
- Add many others here

Is the low price related to short-length game?
-You do a long game such as Alien Isolation, people complain.
-You cut extra content to avoid complains, people complain.

But a relatively short game can feel much more satisfying, if the content/action is abundant and well delivered. But the price is just the product of basic logistics. If you sell less expensive digital products, you'll have more hard earned paper. Maybe Bethesda can learn a thing or two with it. Like giving you a free HellBlade PDF comic in your game's folder.

Finally a female hero that isn't a Victoria's Secret model
Blood covering everywhere, dirt, mud, scratches, everything combined with her voice and always expressing watery emotions coming from her hazel blue schizophrenic eyes... My type of girl. I wish we could date in the next Verbeia shrine, she gets my neo-paganism a hard-on all for the unconventional reasons. No ʙᴏᴏʙs windows, no bubble ᴀss baiting, no skin exposure. Just an strong Celtic warrior with X chromosomes, a likable character for you. Lovable for me.

𝐌𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖 𝐈𝐒 𝐀𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐒

Story:
This isn't the first time I play a game in which I'm feeling sad or worried for a character, gamey-games like Alice ''madness'' also did that to me, but it is the first time I actually care. As a psychologist student I feel safe to say Senua's mind is really broken inside, in subtle undertones not always exposed as you have heard. The only way to explain myself better without spoiling this game, and I promise I won't, is to diverge and go crazy.

I have this theory that the TES series is trying to fool you into believing you're using magical items when they're just otherworldly. Like the Eye of Magnus. The main character's POV perceives it as magic and naming outcast beings as gods and sky-lifters as their main pantheon deity. Giorgio A. Tsoukalos would agree with me.

http://gtm.you1.cn/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1107210568

HellBlade integrates a psychological condition though, into the first wall of the running plot, instead of the unbreakable others like the 4th. I say this is a great first step for a game, about how the player perceive the main character - and how he perceives the world around him. Q: Should it stops there? Also, a female warrior looking for her lost love isn't a very common script in this awful misogynist world neither. Lots of disgusting threads are lurking around the hub. This reflects how some time wasters are ᴘɪssᴇᴅ by that game and how effective it is, for that matter.

Finally something new. No classic ''man after his girl'' here. Most publishers hates that. They claim it isn't sellable. But don't be mislead, despiste such realistic outcome, this still a fantasy game in essence. Be advised that there is a chance for you to see one of the most courageous move ever done to a AAA game, intelligently serving immersion.

The safest way to tease the hell out of it is to leave a warning: be careful with the darkness, if you wish to continue.

Gameplay:
For obvious reasons, Arkham Series, Mad Max and The Lord of The Rings Shadow of Mordor has become comparative for high quality standards. The Arkham Knight doesn't feel human, more like Superman when fighting. Well, HellBlade pushes it more close to realism and less gamey. Ninja Theory, the guys behind DMC had two known qualities, level design and combat. But I qualify HellBlade as a hybrid with the best of both forms.

Gameplay is immersive, I'll sort it in 4 sections:
  • Fast pace brutality for a quick definition. You tend to predict the parrying mechanic, but that doesn't make things easy. Unfortunately, beheading and flying body parts aren't present in the final version... it still brutal in many ways. It is actually heartbreaking to see Senua dying animation, if you fail.

http://gtm.you1.cn/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1107210104
  • Environmental Hazards are really chilling, so jumping around like a caped super monkey won't do the trick. You're often forced to focus attention when other games never bother, like climbing or traversing a gap.

  • Where other games includes ''special ability'', this game does it but with a deep reach in madness and density. I'm not talking about the weapons. Her source of power isn't that mystical or fantastical, epic is to bypass psychosis. This is a real depiction of hero, overcoming darkness to overcome even more darkness. Surviving to survive.

  • As far puzzles are interesting, they tend to get saturated over time. But this game is so overwhelmingly enjoyable for me and so creative, that even in the poorest sections, the game manages to fill my joy - like when Senua is blinded and must solve a puzzle.

To explain that I had to connect sound design with gameplay down bellow.

Make sense if you think, such game needs a combat and gameplay that proper fits that dense reality, hence the need for the camera to be so close to the character. Of course you should expect residues of ''gamey'' mechanics, such timed dodges, blockings and intersected combos - and brutal finishing.

Gameplay integration
Level Design: Another state-of-the-art work was expected from the devs, and this is exactly what you will find in about every single corner of the game. Remember, gamey mechanics are needed, and you have 2 ways of engineering that: the right creative way or the wrong boring way. Graphics: The Sky-box is the first thing that mesmerizes me in games but If both are resonating with each other, then its a master piece. But I also love details, and for such dense reality, sharpened deep textures and good animations are pretty much in everywhere. Surface lighting and god-rays is really stealing the scene in that game for me. The face rendering is another state-of-the-art product, I never have seen anything like it plus all the good acting. You'll probably say ''Yeah, L.A. Noire." but the rendering there wasn't all that natural and limitations followed to some extent. Not seeing that here. Sound design: level design, graphics and sounds are intimately dependable of each other in HellBlade due some of its playable narrative. They're alone incredible, perfected in combo. Specially when multiple voices are separated in outstanding binaural, with graphical disturbances while you're walking and that can range from disorienting to bizarre, dangerous to helpful, all in the right way, mixing with gameplay. Scripted, they don't overstay your amusement, but that's fine.

Final Score: 8.9

If you enjoyed this review, please check my curator's page by clicking right here.

When you can feel the rain due its sound effects, when you can feel the cold of a pushing wind, when you can still hear the clash of metal, feel the heat over flames, despair over damnation or shouts of agony, then you give the game a ғᴜᴄᴋ*ɴɢ 10 for the team behind it. For the first time I want my main character to be happy and the damn universe tells me ''maybe''. If you will. This game was a love at first sight case, and I don't plan to leave it.

I'm a former NASA cosmonaut and I was taking my time off. I was playing Detour like 98,9% of Steam gamers was. It was so good that I got distracted by this masterpiece, my spaceship got drawn toward a huge... gargantuan, swollen, bloated blackhole.

Instead of getting crushed, I was ejected to the other side of it. I got that horrible feeling of being cracked by a huge but-whole, full of dark matter for weeks. After finding my way back to Earth, I found out that I'm in some alternate world were America isn't the biggest porn producer, the 80s sci-fi never happened and Hitler became gay and he also did a charitable project with the Jews, to end the famine in Africa. Many things are different, but my mind just got blown after one thing:

In this side of the universe, Detour isn't the best game that have ever been made. There is no way to go back. My life is over.

At first you will be ranting.

The features are confusing at first, the town as well, don`t know where to buy all your pagan stuff and other things. The game mechanics began to feel exaggerated for some reason. Too hard even on normal, as a cheap or out of control thing. It was so annoying that I was planning to thumb it down or refund.

Then "The Butcher's Circus" (some multiplayer form) keeps suggesting to activate DATA COLLECTION and popping up on screen. At first, it is mandatory to activate it. They let you deactivate it later, but it is obligatory all the same. Another corpo rat dictating what's best for me and my computer. After the game's success, someone decided to suck more money.

Then maybe by the destiny, astral congruence or some subtle CTD, I gave the game another chance. I can divide in 3 parts why I keep playing this. If you consider features report some sort of technical spoiler, then don't read it. But there is no story spoiler.

  1. ✞ This game is about imperfect heroes. An imperfect narrator describes some of your current actions, combat status and performance, yours or enemies`s, or things you do or take with great voice acting. It feels specially satisfying when you do something right. Narrative is impressive, for many times I had this feeling I was reading those infamous interactive gothic books "if you choose right, go to page 40." Then, "The hero found nothing but death."

Voice acting is only good on the original main game, the rest feels rushed. Like done in a hurry to please the business model wishes.

Time to roll the dices. The RPG is good thanks to the turn-based battles and this British, somber looking artwork staight out of some sick fairy-tale. It is cute and at the same time disgusting. Pretty much like Fable series artwork, only disgruntled. These things alone already makes the game likeable and playable.

HP and mana is like all other games, but not like this original piece. Why I wasn't sniffing all that at first, I think I was suffering from anosmia. Battles aren't just based on lucky hits, or how many items you got on your inventory. You need some prep-work and other attentions but in a different way. If you're can't flow with the chaos, the unexpected, if you only count with planning, chances are you will fail.

Usually, big city gurls like me knows how to cope or deal or rush with chaos. Expect the unexpected. But without any planning you will also fall. Need everything, including common sense - and you will still fall. Just flow and see how you can dance. And then... Well, fall.

I guess this game is about how expendable and glorious life can be.

  2. ✞ For some outworldly reason, I managed to survive my first battle in "darkest" difficulty with only 3 warriors. I got angry and went back to replay it, I thought it was scripted. But this game is a survival in essence, it was my fault. So I tried again from zero like 5 times. I finally learned it, the core of problem solving is at the stress level.

I would feel proud with my victory, if the survivors hadn't all become a bunch of broken paranoid lunatics. Infected with phobias, psychological disorders, stress and unpredictable changes of mood. Even when a hero is good, if he/she grows up too broken, it will be better to retire/dismiss them than trying any treatments. There is inflation on the prices at some point you can't control.

It is not random crap, it is all real. Example; The light went off because I never bought enough torches. We had to fight the final fight in complete darkness. One of the 4 characters got used with it. After that, when there is light, she debuffs with it. It is mechanical, still can flows nice but hard as hell.

When the adventure becomes a military operation.

Think of the manor's state like how The Wall from GOT began. All types will end up at the outpost, or should I say death prison.

Preemptive measures aren't all that good, so you need to take care of them during battle and after battle as well. Maintain good relantionship on the team by camping. Find some funny traits, or avoid them and recruit them. Traits, negative or positive are up to your attention and strategy of how to better proceed.

1- Maybe you find a hero to recruit that has the "pep talk" trait. And curious abilities like smoking pot... I mean... "experimental vapours." Not all negatives are that negative.

2- Find one, or be lucky enough to maintain at least one possible platoon "leader", if he/she has speech traits or beliefs that may bring peace or order.

3- Maybe you find an entire group of good characters that can form a typical heroic band. Or the opposite and win the title of inglorious besterds. The combination can be surprising.

4- You gotta evolve the town's size in the innards, for post-battle treatments or relaxation, gotta buy them by collecting treasures and money then using it on the town. Sometimes the mansion's caretaker goes in there town and uses one of the slots you will need, rendering it useless to use it.

Expect British-like humor and sarcasm as you decay into the putrid abyss of the aged oblivion of the great nothingness, while the caretaker attempts to heal something like his sanity, he has probably already lost.

The Sanctity of this place has been fouled.

Other games have tried that before, but just this little one made it into a complex battle penalties.

    • A well fought battle and victory itself can really boost their minds and morale up as well.

    • A hero won't always fall into desperation, some particular characters may brave the bad effects by themselves (but may lose it if you abuse it) helping the long-term. How cool does that sound? Others will disagree and get stressed, negativity can spread and debuff others, but the brave will be more buffy.

    • But tough sonafabeaches are rarer. Usually when a character is really desperate or nervous, game over is around the corner. Funny how depending of the move, the opposite can change scenarios. A coward can get courageous and a brave can earn a phobia. Etc. Etc.

If things keeps changing all the time, all the time, you're doing something wrong. Like stressing them on a over-level scenario or putting them in the wrong team's position. You gotta think, watch the penalties, go slow and do the pre-work.

    • Planning is also needed when not in battle, that is where the war is actually happening.

    • Characters can get to like or dislike each other, so just resting isn't enough.

    • I appreaciate there is no main hero or main character, until you personally define by yourself some personal canon. Experienced survivalist characters may earn the proper badge, so it is really good when you keep them alive and sane (or not).

Who's the leader of the team for you? Who's the second hand? You can't lock that in-game but you can attach yourself some (thread your feelings carefully) I did that and I must say it helped me keep things right.

  3. ✞ Music flows from ambience and dark undertones, to epic confrontations. It just fits perfectly in all occasions. Dude, when some indie game immerses you, you know you just bought some good s#*t . Animations are ranging from basics to hand-made but they are all pretty organic.

Oldschool are going to be happy, as if Ogre Battle just had a sidescrolling little son. Also if you remember Tristam, well, the dungeons. The diablo under the church. It has been inspired by, but not copy-pasted, it is original by itself and deserves attention.

Lesson learned. Next time give the game a chance first instead of rambling and thumbing it down so quickly. Edit: That statement earned me lots of dislikes. Shame on them.

I just want to pasteurize 143978 enemies in 60 seconds into red, purple and yellow heat-treat glue and feel like the best high-score maker, with the best moshgirl just because she's masked, lighting bolt special power with 3 options and a couple new music that are so intoxicating, it fires your confindence up no matter how weakling you may be.

Its like dope and alcohol in the same dosage I'm afraid.

Bullshots malpractice always blameful. A would be unique side scrolling going survival, thought I would need it.

Sucessfully impressed me with semi-vibrant graphics as other indie games suscessfully did. Not making himself a legend, probably due bad direction or programming: Darkout has the worst menu and inventory navigation I have ever seen 20 years combined. Toke me more than 3424324 hours to figure out how to replenish or choose weapon and I don't think my brain is that faulty when I'm sober.

Not all is red, Its just the major problem. Once you can get past that ridiculous interface, Darkout is a enough forward sidescrolling. But... I don't think a mere time dumper was the devs intentions, just look at those spurious screenies and misbegotten game description, now it feels like it could have been much more. But how? Was the main menu music propinquity with Mass Effect tune supposed to help?

Simply put, I have no idea if I should recommend this thing. For the lack of neutral scores in our cherished Steam interface, I think it is just best for you if I thumb that down. But I won't refund or anything, if this helps consolate people.

Good enough to glide in spotless relaxation, nevertheless I must warn you that no one will be cummlng blowing loads or busting nuts or anything. I'll disclose furthermore that I won't be dumping this game if I'm enjoying it, apart from all the negativity. Tons of hogwash I've read just to throw out one's chest. Gerund is, although, my aversion for games that lacks intrincate plot and live the basics of the same, like A.I. Invasion is. It can be incoherent and diminishes the existencial purpose of what the *uck I'm doing and why the *uck I'm fighting for. But at least there are clear objectives to find the meaning of life. I struggle basic commutatives for this that you'd compest, though I do, I don't give a shi* if it is just fun. In the end this is what matters to me.

Understated simplification: It is like Halo: Spartan Assault with squad and no cover.
