Kojima is but one great mind among many. Only praising Hideoโ€™s Kojima as an LEGENDARY game developer - as if there is no team behind him, as if he was the only one, over and over everywhere I go? Such brain implant isnโ€™t going to work with everyone. Those other names arenโ€™t blessed by the same advertising methodology like Todd Howard. They're your gods until some Fallout 76 disaster comes out, then all that said โ€œloveโ€ fades away.

When someone is truly legendary, you donโ€™t need someone repeating it so we can remember. What we need is some self-awareness and independent-thoughts and a good dose of freedom, unless youโ€™re willing to go back to the stone-ages. The past decade was pretty close to that so watch yourself out there.

THINK BEFORE YOU CLAIM SOMETHING IS BORING, THEN COMPLAIN AFTER THAT.

Some writers can go very deep in both spirituality and psychology, even existentialism, not very popular with some folks. Before claiming this game is boring, movies like Angelโ€™s Egg could illuminate some people. The slow pace is slowly building those things I mentioned, the slow pace is required. Sadly when it is a game, it can affect the gameplay with a very long learning curve. When someone misuses that or overstays it there, then it is BORING - it is exactly the case here.

10 things that I like about Death Stranding

Those types of games usually lets you create your own character and customize hundreds of stuff. This isnโ€™t the case here, but I must say this isnโ€™t a rule so I got no problem with that.

  1. You can choose the โ€œvery easyโ€ difficulty if you're a story-only kind of gamer.

  2. Immersion flanks differently than most games.

  3. The story isnโ€™t exactly what I was told, but still got its own meritory moments.

  4. Sam is an imperfect hero and I always enjoy those types.

  5. I like the communion between sci-fi and fantasy. (sci-fantasy?)

  6. The terrain modeling was the reason I bought the game.

  7. Satisfying sci-fi design on suits, guns, equipment and vehicles.

  8. Voice acting during cutscenes are very good, with few exceptions.

  9. I like how this game braves uncharted mechanics like the 90s games used to do.

  10. Exploration, strategy, action, horror, fantasy, itโ€™s everything here but not quite there.

Things that should be illegal

Games like this where the farming is so thorough, the reward is often reasonable with the stuff you go through. When I deliver I guess Iโ€™m being rewarded with MORE crap so I can build stuff to keep farming other crap. For better or for worse, the main reason is to progress the story that barely attaches me to any character, because the game persists in keeping weirdness going on while it drains humanity from them so I naturally stop caring about them.

  • PC platforms can do much better graphics than this.

The โ€œvery high settings'' is supposed to be ultra? It is a sad dead thing to see. I understand all the porting yadda-yadda behind it but the lack of deeper tweaking by design is insulting. But I guess crushing console capabilities this bad would either be expensive or just bad for console business.

  • The 3rd person camera bumps...

They almost โ€œfixedโ€ one of the most annoying problems that prevented me from buying this game past year, so I was right all along. When running on-foot over rocks and damaged terrain (that is 90% of the game) the camera dead zone was straight locked behind Samโ€™s center back like the first 3D games ever made. It caused the camera to stutter progressively after stepping rocks and small stuff, it was really irritating. Now it seems to be much smoother and way better now - unfortunately I can still see signs of it there - perhaps it's just trauma.

  • Corporate weakling sponsoring a game at the cost of immersion.

In a post apocalypse world it seems Monster still is fabricating the energy drink. How? Dunno. Not just energy drink but also โ€œcollaborationโ€ with other games that got nothing to do with the provided theme, such as Cyberpunk 2077. Sam has this โ€œmagicโ€ can, that when you fill with natural water, the energy drink mysteriously refills again. Sorry, but my brain just canโ€™t ignore this sheat.

15 things that I canโ€™t stand

  1. The fourth-wall breaking is supposed to be funny?

  2. False sense of difficulty, the BBs arenโ€™t that much of a threat as you guessed.

  3. Delivery can be repetitive to the extreme, and super systematic.

  4. Dialog is the work of a university freshman. It is often immature and repetitive.

  5. Amateurish body capture in cutscenes undermines voice acting.

  6. Cutscenes are so slow they could use dialog options to spice things up.

  7. Driving on the landscape could have been as hard and organic as it is on foot.

  8. Preparation is very confusing, too many pointless useless numbers and info.

  9. Excessive tips are badly timed overloading information instead of helping.

  10. Mandatory โ€œcourtesy musicโ€ you canโ€™t turn off in options.

  11. This game could use a glider, since mechanical aerial vehicles canโ€™t be used.

  12. I donโ€™t get why Sam uses a hoodie instead of a helmet against Timefall.

  13. I donโ€™t get why everything ages to rain, but not the grass, not the buildings.

  14. You wonโ€™t meet A.I. porters but you find other playerโ€™s remains. (in a singleplayer?)

  15. The foundation of the genre is sound, but the delivery is rather confusing.

I respect the developers intentions and I get it. It seems it wasnโ€™t the intention to provide an ultra realistic game, just hiking mechanics and some fighting, yet there is realism, but no. If you run too much, you can trip over a rock and fall - thatโ€™s realistic. But you can also take items from the ground at superhuman speed, or carry items tower high, so high it is ridiculous and hilarious. Thatโ€™s gamey mechanics. Those types of confusing things seems to always land on the โ€œKojimaโ€™s styleโ€ card or whatever, sorry but writing doesn't work like that.

Final Score: 5/10 - Refunded due disappointing perfomance

I remember watching Evangelion when I was younger, but I could spot when the director was trying to act the mysterious writer, it was a downside to me. When you can spot the attempt then the magic dies. Disturbing has nothing to do with annoying. A good movie to use as an example is โ€œMother!โ€ dreaded fever sequence in the house and the Matrix trilogy, people still discuss if the real world is truly real, now that's real mysteries. In games you got the Indoctrination Theory on Mass Effect. See what I mean?

Death Stranding just keeps posing, forcing it down, trying to act mysterious and weird but very frequently it falls out pretentious. The main reason is a poor virtual camera direction, some gamey immaturity here and there pretending to be a movie or series or whatever. It isnโ€™t bad, but indulgent at best. Maybe next time.

Thank you too, and sorry if anything. I had to defend a game I didn't like, this is why I brought the Angel's Egg example up. You can imagine how tiresome it is

No problem. Thank you for your time.
I already refunded this piece of crap as I totally lost the interest on it, thanks and all but I have no energy left to discuss.

I only read a couple parts of your explanation in respect to your effort, I know how it is when you want to say something to someone but there are no clear means. With me it is safe don't worry.

I've lost "friends" over this, popularity too, but I will never lose myself. That's what's important. You should consider doing a review yourself if not already and share.

Oh, as an addendum, people who insult you for not liking a game that is made by renown people are people who are a bit too biased for their own good.
I do not believe one can truely be unbiased but it certainly helps to detach the work from the artist to judge it by its own merit.

Then again, fanbases are always a little bit difficult to interact with, no matter if games, music or even just people who are part of a certain culture. But that is a different topic all-together.

Again, thank you for the review, it was an informative read.

In my opinion, Death Stranding is a very unique game in the landscape of an oversaturated market of videogames that are derivatives of each other.
A fresh breath and quite an experience. But absolutely not for everyone due to its slow-paced nature and the rather odd way of how things are presented.

Personally I think it is a great game that has flaws and concepts that could have been explored better, but I still consider it one of my favourite video-game experiences of the past few years.
I was not hyped about the game though so I went in without any real expectations as I tried to keep myself from being spoilered by reviews etc.

This is why I have only read your review now after I finished it approximately 2 months ago.

Point 14, you do meet AI Porters in this game but they aren't particularly interesting.
They do deliver from A to B, you sometimes meet them when approaching a location or even out in the wilderness. They hand out free goodies for you if you hang around for a bit and you can greet them, they wave at you. You can also accidentally run them over which will deduct likes from you, or attack them, but if you end up killing them you will have to deliver their body to an incinerator or you'll cause the void-out that everyone fears so much.

There is a bunch of other stuff in your review that I disagree with but all of that is too much to address through a comment. And I do not know if you even care about discussing this.

I do not know how much you remember about the world of Death Stranding but you might remember that it was established that Chiralium, this golden crystal matter that sometimes manifests on the ground and that falls from the Clouds is a matter that is resistant against timefall.
All the buildings in this game are coated with Chiralium, which is why the timefall does not have such a strong effect on buildings. But it is mentioned that said coating has to be re-applied every now and then because it corrodes.

As far as using a hoodie against timefall instead of a helmet, I do not believe it matters because the material does not really matter. If you meant that he gets splashes of timefall on his face, that is a reasonable argument and I could not really find an explanation for that either. But there are a lot of things in this game that are a little bit odd and could have been explained better, or set up in a different way.

I generally recommend maxing out all porters to 5-stars just for the sake of learning more about the world. In fact, I really like that information about the world is "hidden" in these mails (and audio-logs in Metal Gear), its an interesting way of telling more about the world and its inhabitants without bothering people who do not care about this by shoe-horning it into dialogue and cutscenes.
I would also like to mention that the information presented in these mails is not 100% reliable because people only tell you what they believe to be true. There is quite a bit of stuff in these mails that is revealed to be a false conclusion or assumption as the game progresses. I really like that, it feels very human.

Sorry, I have to split this apart because of the character limit.

Good review.

As far as your argument for Timefall goes (Point 12 and 13 of the things you do not like), information about this is stated in the mails that you receive when you continue delivering to Stations and Preppers and in interviews that you can sometimes find if you find these memory shards.
Never  I don't hate just because I thumbed it down.

No hate, only disappointment. Mainly against the community that accepts everything so easily. I won't like things only because someone good did it. If games resonates with you, then yes it is good.
