On the surface - a fresh revival of a classic title, with fantastic new graphics, and new mechanics that help expand the game's depth without over-complicating it. Only real aspect I'm not huge into is the addition of the Super meter, but maybe through extended play I could warm up to it.

Only thing is, the online play is woefully barebones.

The matchmaking is virtually non-existent, as both main options, Ranked and Quick Play will pair you with a random player, regardless of factors like Ping, which can lead to horrible matches with plenty of teleporting with a nice side of input lag.

Invite matches are possible, but not via Crossplay, so no Steam + Gamepass matchups. Unless possibly in Quick/Ranked. Lobbies are also left in the cold, so no spectator mode, which hammers the last nail in the coffin for any online tournaments.

Game is worth a look if you can get local play going, but as I'm writing this we are in Year 3 of a pandemic and local play just isn't feasible for most.

Very disappointing. Hard to recommend playing this over the original when you can access it on a service like Fightcade with superior online play.

Windjammers is an old outdated game with vertex graphics, 8 bits of memory, 1 level of play, it has no scaling capability, no digital stereo sound, no multiplayer, no secret codes, MAN THE GUYS DON'T EVEN BLEED!

Plus, I mastered it when I was 3, OK?

Eh, it's a $20 game at the end of the day. Spectator mode and lobbies would be nice, but I'm not aware of a cheap indie game that can provide features comparable to a bigger budge title. Gotta keep your expectations in check.

I agree that what's currently there (quick match and ranked match) need improvements, such as some kind of ping filters so you're not being paired with 200+ Ping players constantly.

Also, I find it weird that the handful of players aware of the franchise would even give it a thumbs down when they're the main reason Windjammers 2 exists. But to each his own, hopefully Dotemu realizes that they need to pull in new players as opposed to relying on the small, old guard.

Odd review.
You play on release day for a game that is a cult classic at best. I would not expect many to know about this game. So this is where your issues with matchingmaking stems from.
I agree that if you experience lag, that is a problem.
Plenty of games don't have a Spectator mode and it is silly to give a negative for that. Watch a stream if you want to watch. If the game had a Spectator mode, that would be a bonus.
Expecting Crossplay is unrealistic. Especially from Dotemu.
You barely touch on how the game plays. It seemed you liked it.

Here is the kicker, I don't even own the game....
