pve by yourself is alright, but the real meat of the game is doing raids, either going in blind or reading one of the many guides out there. theres other matchmade activities that dont necessarily require a premade group or friends, but they dont really compare to the non-matchmade activities such as high level strikes, dungeons, and the aforementioned raids.
the story, however, isnt very engaging and much of the interesting lore is hidden away in collectible lore books and lore tabs on weapons/armor
pvp is an option in this game as well, but its a mixed bag where it can have its fun moments, but other times you end up frustrated after a session due to a handful of unbalanced weapons, armor and abilities as well as peer-to-peer servers resulting in players lagging all over the place
