For years I've avoided this game, mainly going by the kind of reviews that currently plague this Steam page. But, I decided to take a leap of faith, and guess what? The game is awesome, and highly recommended if you've been playing the PSX version through an emulator to get slightly better graphics, and especially to those that have been rocking the older PC version, which was buggy and contaned inferior music tracks. Let's check off the list of improvements, eh?

- Overall smoother looking graphics AND backgrounds

- Same music as the original PlayStation game

- "Easy" mode that boosts all of your stats so you just enjoy the story (requires Cloud save and to be online)

- Can be modded if you want (though outside of Steam)

To be clear, you DO have to create a Square Enix account, but I've only had to login once and never again. Try that with your Origin or UbiPlay games. And to all those people complaining about have to be online, this is what happens if you want Cloud saving and are online with Steam. If you don't want this, turn off Cloud saving and you can take Steam offline. You lose the ability to use your save between computers, but you can also be offline all the time.

Now, things aren't perfect, but this is more indicative to it being based on the PC game. While I am primarily a PC gamer, FFVII just feels unnatural on the keyboard. I'm sure that if I played a few hours I wouldn't care, but right now thinking about juggling all that materia whilst using the keyboard gives me the cold sweats. Luckily, it does have partial controller support. You know the drill for Steam; get a compatible controller or an app that can get you own working.

So, to recap: This game rocks! You have to create a SQ account, but since you only login once, I don't see what is the big deal. I mean, you have to login into Steam to get this far, don't you? Plus, you get to cheat right out of the box (no mods required). So, if you've always wanted to get a better looking version of FFVII, or haven't played the game but was curious as to why it is lauded so, go ahead and pick this game up.

EDIT: Years later and I would like to add that while I've signed into and downloaded FF7 on Steam literally dozens of times over the years on many different machines (most of them NOT Windows) I've still yet to sign in more than that first time to the SQ account!
