Let me be clear; this game is by no means flawless. However, I still think it can be incredibly fun and despite the flaws, and as such both my friends and I continuously return to the game.
Since this’ll be a long review, and some people might not have the time (or the will) to read my rambling, I’ll list off my pros and cons first, TL:DR style:

    Pros:
  • Rewarding level up system, without being overpowered
  • Great customisation (especially executes, some with dark humour and some gloriously gory ones)
  • Surprisingly not yet abandoned by Ubisoft; game is updated fairly frequently
  • Enjoyable gameplay (In my opinion, more inspired than Street Fighter or Tekken, which I feel grow dull and repetitive quickly)
  • It's a lot of fun! Seriously!

    Cons:

  • Can be incredibly inconsistent mechanically (Partially due to peer-to-peer system, which is being replaced)
  • Game balance hasn't been solved, with Assassins generally ruling supreme
  • Can be buggy
  • Lag/Disconnects (Mostly sorted at this stage by dedicated servers)
  • Some characters have hard to counter and easily abusable mechanics (really an extension from point 2, but my anger at this decided it was worth an extra point, go figure)

Here's a few details on this, starting with my biggest gripes against the game.

My biggest issue with the game isn't the unreliable connection (which, by the way, should be fixed soon with the implementation of dedicated servers) or a lot of the other complaints. It’s the balance. As someone who’s played for nigh on 600 hours, I can safely say that some characters are entirely better than others, and just plain unfair to fight. The most concerning thing about this is perhaps the disconnect between the community and the developers about this - One character who is notoriously weak (lawbringer) was possibly denied a rework, with one of the mods effectively saying people just needed to 'git gud', though hopefully this was just the opinion of the one mod in question, rather than the overall view of the developer team.

[Paragraph removed due to new massive update - will rewrite when the impact of the Marching Fire Expansion has settled down]

But as I said at the start of the review, this game is also a blast to play at times. When you do catch that overpowered character by predicting them, or when you pull off a miraculous 4v1 to save the game, the feeling is incredibly good. Moreover, the different gear you obtain gets more and more interesting looking as you play a character, and get better; there are many customisation options, and the fact that different gear has different stats allows you to fine tune a character to your playstyle (you can upgrade attack at the cost of defence, or stamina regen at the cost of stamina costs). Many of the emotes executes and effects look amazing, and for me, there is the right balance of gritty medieval combat and slight humour with many of these.

I do not regret buying this game at full price at all, though for some it is certainly not worth this price. I simply recommend it as an enthusiast of medieval stuff. Even though I listed more cons than pros, I feel that the pros are great enough to outweigh the negative aspects of the game, especially the fact that it can be so, so much fun. Have I said that enough yet?

    Wew, that was long.
