This version was a pre-war design, it lacks the turret bustle which was added on the Ausf. E variant and all later models.
The IV was an infantry support vehicle, a turreted assault gun, it evolved into a general service tank per se when it received the 43 caliber gun on the Ausf. F2, then the 48 calibre gun on some Ausf. G and was standard on the Ausf. H.
