The game is in much better shape now to what it was but the fact remains the DLC should have been in the base game. Next we have the issue with Sega deciding to go with the Game Gear versions instead of the Master System versions. I mean I play these games on a Steam Deck so it doesn't bother me that much but the vast majority don't have a Steam Deck here so this is a genuine issue seeing as the Game Gear versions are borderline unplayable for many because of severe lag whenever you have more than 2 enemies on screen which tbh is ridiculous and hilarious at the same time. 2 steps forward one step back as usual, oh and I still detest Sonic 2's Special Stages too they made me angry back in the day they make me angry now with or without the retries.

Edit: If you've never played Sonic CD before avoid that game's Special Stages if you value your sanity. I have never in my life played a mini game quite as rage inducing as this before, Specifically I'm referring to Special Stage 5. Jesus Christ what were they thinking with this? now the others aren't too bad in comparison but if you want the good ending you have to beat them. I played Sonic CD when it launched back in the day but I never bothered with the Special Stages and I remember why now.

I managed to beat them but was it worth it? no. I got zero enjoyment from playing them and instead I just wanted to rip my hair out but thank God I never have to play them ever again. I can enjoy the game without them getting in the way. An alternative way to see the good ending is to destroy Dr Eggman's machine in the past to make a good future and this is done by touching past sign posts and maintaining enough momentum until you're able to time travel, still a bit tedious but much better than playing those dreadful Special Stages.
