Season 5 2023 Review: ***************************************************** Getting Better.....

This game has come a long way. The new leadership at 343 has been making good strides in the right direction. This game finally has the amount of content people expected at launch. There are a lot of different experiences to try and they are making frequent updates that have been pretty good. Things took a turn for the better around season 4. With all that said, there are still some glaring design choices that I disagree with, but bringing in the Bandit EVO as the competitive starting weapon is surprising and refreshing! It's a shame they didn't just make it the starting weapon across the board. They still need to add better social features such as pre and post game lobbies, in game stats, match composer, veto system, fix desync, improve matchmaking system, improve customs browser, fix theater which is broken, the list goes on and on really. But from a content perspective, the game is no longer boring because so many different experiences have been added. There is a lot to try and change in and out between playing. They need to continue frequently adding community content to playlists to keep the playlists fresh.

Release Review: *************************************************************** Not Good.....

I am amazed that this took 6 years and over 500 million dollars to make. The biggest disappointment is the sheer lack of content at launch. They knew it was a barebones launch, so the released the "whole" thing as a "Beta". They need more maps and game types, and more playlists.

Bottom Line Up Front:
******* THIS IS AN EARLY ACCESS GAME THAT TOOK 6 YEARS AND OVER 500 MILLION DALLARS TO MAKE *******

UI:
Not a fan of the user interface. For a free to play game, the custimazion user interface is especially awful. It is hard to tell what is new stuff you just acquired. It is hard to navigate.

Sound:
The music so far is good but I have had a lot of issues with the sound in the game. Times where it cuts out all together. Times where I'm getting shot from the back and there is no sound at all. The games sound system all together is just too overbearing. Too much audible clutter.

Graphics:
The graphics aren't amazing, but they are bad either. I like the old school aesthetic they used that is inspired by Halo C.E..

Aiming:
The aiming is awful. Why can't 343 seem to get Keyboard and Mouse Aiming to feel right? It feels absolutely awful. This games still has some serious aiming issues.

Performance:
Lots of performance issues, but I can tell a small improvement from the flights. They still have a long way to go to make this game feel smooth. It sufferers from a lot of stuttering and FPS dips. I have a high end PC and it should not struggle with this game.

Gunplay:
Probably my least favorite part of this game is the awful gunplay. Casual play in Quickplay and Big Team Battle is just Assault Riffle meta, which is terrible. The sidekick could be good but it takes too many shots to kill, has bloom, and far too small of a magazine. The Commando also has bloom and too small of a magazine as well. The BR is too easy to use and takes way too long to get a kill with for close range. There is not good completive utility weapon in this game. I find myself going for the assault riffle even in ranked mode because it is just so much better at close range. Hip firing at medium to long range is just not effective either which is really disappointing. They really need to make a lot of adjustments to the gunplay and 343 is notorious for being very hesitant to make adjustments to gun behavior. I will be surprised if there are really any significant adjustments in the first 6 months.

Movement:
The grapple is fun! Not a fan of sprint but it is nerfed to where it is almost useless to use which is better than previous Halo games with Sprint. I hate that they added thruster as a pickup item. Clamber is really bad for the game as well. All the maps seem to be designed around clamber. Why not just let people jump up onto ledges? There is no skill in timing your jumps anymore.

Map design:
The big team battle maps seem pretty cool so far.
The arena maps are so awful and there is only six of them. With no forge at launch, we are stuck with these 6 arena maps and they pretty much all suck. Behemoth is my favorite by far. I am really hoping the forge mode kicks ass when it finally launches because 343 can't seem to make a decent arena map to save their life.

Overall:
The game is better than Halo 5 was at launch, but it is very similar in that it is launching extremely barebones just like Halo 5 did. At least there is a proper social Big Team experience with Halo Infinite, where as Halo 5 did not have that. Unfortunately its Assault Riffle starts because 343 NEVER LEARNS. The maps are not very memorable. There are too few maps. Too few game types. Gunplay sucks. I think this game will get boring pretty fast. It is astounding that this is what we get after 6 years.

I'm only 74 minutes in and I am blown away. Really, really good so far.
My biggest fear going into this game was motion sickness. I don't really get motion sickness with games where you are stationary, but I tried Boneworks and got really sick every time i tried to play it. I played for 74 minutes straight and only slightly started to get a little motion sickness towards the end, but nothing like I felt it really heavy within 5 minutes of Boneworks.

So far the story and environment are really immersive, sound is great, graphics are the best I've seen for VR.

I am playing with Link enabled on an Oculus Quest BTW.
I cant wait to play more and finish the campaign.
