Early Access Review
Endnight changes up their horror formula for a healthy mixture of atmospheric uncertainty and fast pased action. It works surprisingly well, and has great gameplay and is an amazingly fun experience, but severely lacks in proper storytelling.

Compared to the first game, the possibilities for building around and across the island are virtually limitless, straying a little bit away from the blueprint-oriented gameplay of the forest in favor of free-form structure placement, letting you build pretty much whatever you want, granted you have the materials. The subreddit for this game has no shortage of people building entire towns, castles, and mansions just because they feel like it.

One thing I noticed this game did much better is movement options. Much like the first game, Sons of The Forest brings back many movement options, such as the glider and ziplines (now included as an item rather than a blueprint, thank God), but compensates for how large the map is by adding scooters and golf carts to lessen the burden of walking around the island for days. I've had the most fun so far by playing with all the advanced movement systems, especially the glider launcher.

The story isn't the greatest, although you'll see many reviews attribute this to the lack of story present in the early access beta. Despite this, there's a lot of unanswered questions in the full game that are most likely meant to be left up to interpolation. Much like the first game, the story seems to revolve around a few concrete facts and surrounded by side content that never connects or goes anywhere, which kinda disappointed me considering the sequel improved on so many things from the first game.

Despite all the negative traits I mention, this game was one of the best 8-player experiences I've had in a very long time. It's a janky game, sure, but it's easy to get used to and a great time for everyone involved.

it's not even that it's a bad game, it works totally fine for the most part, but the biggest problem is that it's just so empty and feels incredibly soulless.

the biggest hurdle that this game had to overcome was living up to the hype of payday 2, which it did for about a week after launch, and then completely gave up. radio silence from the devs and pushback about how the game handles were all that followed the launch.

the armour system is still notoriously terrible, and despite the community almost unanimously agreeing that it needs a change, the devs refuse to change it in any meaningful way. progression is impossible unless you no-life the challenges. movement feels sluggish and the game overall feels like it's still in beta. syntax error dlc was beyond forgettable and overpriced.

awful levelling system, tiny payouts and overpriced weapons, and nebula content finally being added 6 months later (seriously, how do you ♥♥♥♥ that up?)

stealth is honestly the only real improvement I can say I enjoy so far. the new hitman-like style of stealth is a fresh of breath air from the "stay out of line of sight" mechanics of 2. despite this, a stealth and loud builds are absolutely required in order to thrive in each phase respectively, which was something thought to be done away with in this game.

operation medic bag is the first time i've had real hope for this game since launch. it's one thing to promise all of these fixes and changes, but to actually implement them makes me feel like they're beginning to care about the game again.

it's much better than payday 2 was at launch for sure. it's infinitely more replayable and just has more content. like payday 2,
I imagine (and hope) a lot of unwanted content will be removed similar to how pro jobs and old skill trees were scrapped and reworked.

the game is totally playable and fine if you don't think of it as a payday game, but more of a custom gamemode in a first person shooter. not enough content to warrant a full price purchase at the moment

needs much more QoL updates and content overall. get it on sale and you have a decent deal.
