Gundam Breaker 4 may have its flaws, but it's a significant improvement over New Gundam Breaker, and in some aspects Gundam Breaker 3 as well. It is a decent game, and a great customization sandbox. However, some player may want to wait for a discount before purchase for reasons I'll explain further down.

When it comes to Gundam/Mecha customization, Gundam Breaker 4 is quite astonishing. There isn't anyting else like it, to my knowledge, with such an expansive and flexible system that not only allows you to create pretty much anything for your playable unit, but also show it off easily in-game with either the Gallery, Diorama, or Bounty Hunter modes.

Literally the only limit is your imagination. The ability to freely change the size and position of any of thousands available parts allows for all sorts of cool-looking and/or wacky creations. Not only that, but anything can be made so that it both looks great, and plays the way you want to. I've seen so many great creations other players have made, that listing only a few examples would be a disservice. Personally, I was able to create a cool-looking mech and adapt it to my playstyle without any compromises. In that regard GB4 is a real step up even when compared to GB3.

When it comes to the core mechanics, some things have been changed and/or simplified when compared to GB3, but honestly, I don't really mind any of them. Dual wielding weapons offers great variety, all parts can be easily upgraded and personalized, learning new skills and abilities has been made much easier, and there is little to no grind involved in the whole process. Some builds have been nerfed or limited when compared to GB3, but the devs did address at least some issues via patches, based on players' feedback.

However, the game has several flaws, and sadly a few of them are quite major. While the customization is amazing, the gameplay itself is lacking in pretty much every regard. The game has been turned from fun level-based hack'n'slash into monotonous wave-based arena slaughterfest, without any variety. You start a mission, teleport into a very small arena, fight off several waves of mobs, automatically move to another small arena, repeat. Some levels end with a huge boss fight, but they aren't anything epic, really. Just a single giant enemy with an equally large HP pool. Even New Gundam Breaker was more varied in that regard... What's worse is that the game is not really that difficult. Enemies are brainless, yet have such high resistances and HP pools that fighting some of them isn't really satisfying, just tedious.

Not only that, but the game's story is pretty bad. I won't even describe the premisse, because it all boils down to yet another "power of friendship" type of story, with some stereotypical and one-note characters. Nothing even remotely comparable to Gundam Build Fighters.

The game does look decent at best, but it's really nothing special nowadays. What is more, the game reuses some assets and whole music tracks from GB3. The ones you're probably sick of already if you've played the last entry. I mean, would it really be that hard to do something new, or at the very least vary the OST a bit with tracks from the whole series? I have no idea what they've been thinking simplifying things so much...

And while I did have fun with GB4, even with this wave-based gameplay, I do realize some people may not be satisfied with how things have been simplified. I mean, the foundation is strong here, the customization is better than ever, and all the tools are flexible and easy to use. It's just that the gameplay loop starts to get old after a while. And if you've played previous Gundam Breaker titles then you should know how things could have been much better. I feel like even though GB3 is considered the favorite entry for most fans, it was the GB2 that offered the most varied missions and locations.

If GB4 would offer its expansive customization with more varied gameplay then it might have ended up being one of the best, if not the best Gundam game out there. As it is, though, it's just a decent game, primarily for Gundam fans. I do honestly still recommend it as a whole, but some people may want to wait for a bigger discount first.
