This game was recommended to me by... a friend. The whole series, really. I've never been the biggest fan of jrpgs or even rpgs in general. It took some convincing to get me to even buy this game, much less to play and finish it. I've only played and finished FFX as of right now, and haven't touched any of the other options from the launcher. But the overall experience was overwhelmingly moving to me, so I had to write this immediately after finishing the game. FFX really is a game to play for the story, it's by far the best part of it. But there are a few detractors. In my opinion, the pros overwhelmingly outweigh the cons. Simply put, this game is worth full price. If you see it on sale, buy it and play it. It was a long 51 hours for me (~6 hours over average), but it was worth it. This is borderline a game that you'd get the same experience watching someone else play it as you do playing it yourself, but not fully. A vast majority of the time spent is walking and combat, in theme with the game's story and setting. I personally loathe grinding in games. I could write a 1000 word essay about why. I spent about 30 hours of the game grinding and walking alone. Along with that, mechanics get explained a single time, you get an example, then you have to remember how it works. The game does not hold your hand. Fortunately, you do get a menu option to reexplain mechanics and more, which I went to many times. Overall, I'd say the repetitive actions and other issues I had with the game take away 2 points from the overall score. However, the story, characters, world and how they all come together massively outdo my gripes with the game. Even with things that I hate present in this game, it's still a 9/10 for me. Games, movies, books-- stories rarely make me tear up. At least 5 separate times, this story made me cry. I am not going to spoil a word of the story.
To summarize:
-Overall score: 9/10
-Cons:
Long runtime
Grindy gameplay loop
-Pros:
Phenomenal story
Easily investable characters and world
-Approx game time: ~50 hours
-Buggy?:
The game only crashed on me a single time, right near the end.
Really, even if you don't much care for rpgs, if you like stories, this is one of the best.
