100%'d this game on both Epic Games store and Steam now, and I loved every minute of it. I would definitely place this game in my top games of all time - not because it necessarily does one single thing superbly, but because it is just such an enjoyable game that I haven't gotten tired of playing in the half dozen times I've gone through it.

I really recommend giving it a shot, I don't think you'll be disappointed.


I think the worst thing you could do to Bugsnax is discredit it as some kind of "Knack 2 baby" type joke game. A lot the reviews are just "bunger", and while its funny, I do really want to stress that there is actually a really lovely game here.

A nice little ~8 hour experience, Bugsnax is a tight cozy little game that feels like a PS2-era title in all of the best ways. On release it was nicely polished right out the gate back in 2020, and the version now available on Steam is its final form with the free expansion that adds a bit more to do in terms of optional content.


The cast is really great, Snorpy being my personal favorite. If you engage with the optional sidequests, the characters all have a bit more emotional depth than you would expect from a game like this, and you can tell the guys at Young Horses really wanted to pump some life into these characters. They actually handle a couple of themes in a really mature way, and I respect the heck out of them for sticking true to their ideas. Not to mention, their voice acting is really superb. Heck, you've got Ryuji and Morgana from Persona 5 voicing a couple of the grumpuses, and Shinji from the Netflix Evangelion dub.

Main plot-wise, the obvious weird body horror of the bugsnax leaves you intrigued enough to see the story through to the end for sure just to figure out the mysteries. I think its a nice mix of charm and intrigue that this game's story will please most enough. I do think that the relationships between the other characters are really where this game shines though.


I would describe the game as maybe a mix of Pokemon Snap, and Slime Rancher. Its pretty unique though. Imagine if instead of battling pokemon to capture them, you had to solve a little puzzle. With half-dozen gadgets, its surprising how many ways you need to utilize them to capture every single bugsnak.

Beyond that, I actually really like the speed of your character in first person. The movement is surprisingly snappy and feels good. Heck I speedran this game back when it was only on Epic Games store.

There's plenty of optional challenges and things to collect if you just wanna keep playing like I did, so everyone should be pleased.

Random aside: Wow it is really refreshing having a game without any kind of currency or shop system.

I would describe the game as having a colorful PS2 aesthetic. I think a demake of this game would be really neat to see, honestly. The character/bugsnak designs are all really charming as well.

The music is surprisingly great. Hits a nice chill semi vapor-wave feel thats just nice and cozy.


With the main "Brokentooth Island" content spanning about ~2 hours, I think it was just a nice little extra piece. I really like the designs of the dozen new bugsnax, and they have a couple fun gimmicks.

I also appreciate that they got to give some extra time to a few of the characters that didn't get quite as much limelight or instant love. While I feel most can place Filbo, Beffica, Cromdo, Snorpy, Chandlo, and Wambus as "top-tier", it's nice that Floofty, Triffany, and Shelda got a little bit more time to shine. Personally I'm okay with Gramble/Wiggle getting sidelined because they don't really do much for me.

As a returning player, I did really enjoy the 100-ish challenges that they added to unlock pieces of furniture for you house. Its a nice throwback to old games to actually give you rewards for challenges that aren't just "currency" of some sort. The house/furniture bit adds nothing to the game, but its just a really fun little bonus for people who want more time with the game.

On top of that, the hats were a cute little touch too. I think their additions with this expansion were super smart, in that they added stuff to collect that was just fun enough to actually feel worth collecting, but not game-changing.

The expansion was free, but I loved the additions. Great work.

Said most of this at the beginning, but the game is really special. Its unlike most other stuff you can play these days, and I think basically anybody will have a great time with it.
