Dusk Diver: A familiar but fun take on anime themed Beat'em Ups with a very interesting story.

Dusk Diver is a anime themed Beat'em up similar to Senran Kagura Estival Versus with some elements from SoulWorker focused on a high school girl, Yang Yumo. going between the real world location Ximending and the alternate dimension of Youshanding where you will be fighting demon invasions with the guardians siding with you to prevent the demons from breaking through unstable dimensional rifts...

Gameplay

You will be between two dimensions in Dusk Diver, the over-world of Ximending where you will mostly be enjoying the scenery of the famous tourist location while progressing the story-line in Visual Novel lite type scenes. The other location being the "Inner-world" an alternate dimension that resembles Ximending known as Youshanding, and this is where you will be fighting the phantoms/Chaos Beasts. The gameplay inside of Youshanding involves killing all the enemies in your current location before you can progress into the next zone. At the end of each dungeon there will be one of three things, a way to progress the story, a micro-boss or an actual Boss. During your time playing you will unlock a few different guardians all with their own special abilities that you can summon to help you in battle. The combat feels very smooth once you have unlocked enough of the skills as well as more of the guardians, but even in the beginning it is still enjoyable. The fights aren't the most complicated in the beginning but as the game progresses the variety of enemies is enough to keep you entertained, and some of the micro-bosses you killed will show up as common enemies later in the game. When in the over-world there is not much content outside of visiting eateries and trying local delicacies which boost attributes which also levels up your guardians friendship level. Something worth mentioning is the way you progress through the game. You need to collect items called Dragon Stones which are needed to go into the next chapters dungeon. You can get the Stones by roaming the streets of Ximending, or you can get them in dungeons either by getting a S rating or by finding the set number of stones in any given dungeon. I never felt like I had to go out of my way to get any of the stones to beat the game but your mileage may vary. The game does have one chapter/location that was painfully tedious involving teleporters and a simple tower defense type mini-game. Outside of that everything else was very enjoyable.

Graphics

Dusk Diver is made using the Unreal Engine and has a very bright in your face anime art style in the over-world of Ximending, while there is a dark color palette when in the dungeons of Youshanding. The over-world is based on the real world location of Ximending of Taipei, Taiwan and is a very faithful recreation done in the anime art style and includes real world places like Cold Stone Creamery as well as other local food vendors/shops. Main characters and enemies in the dungeons are generally high quality and diverse. Some of the enemies are re-skinned and some modified slightly but have different attack styles. A thing many people may not like but I personally loved is the civilians of the over-world, being that they are noticeably lower quality including having no distinguishable facial features when within 10 meters of you but interestingly when they are further than about 10 meters the NPCs turn into a seemingly random color silhouette, so when in the over-world there is even more interesting visuals surrounding you. Unfortunately I will say the graphics options are disappointing currently being only a single graphic setting to switch from low up to very high that controls any and all graphical presets. It seems to mostly be a internal scale resolution as well as draw distance that gets changed when going through the graphics settings. The only other problem with the graphics would be that the game is locked at 30FPS and when in select locations like the "healing tree" behind the convenience store the frame rate will drop as low as 14FPS and stay there as long as you're standing in that general area which is pretty bad, but is not that much of an issue as it's in the over-world thankfully and not in the dungeons so it wont affect your combat.

Sound

The ambiance of Ximendings packed streets captures exactly what you would expect of the popular tourist location with murmurs and general noise pollution all around from the civilians. The background music in the game does serve its purpose but I wish there was more variety in songs that would play in the over world but more so in the Dungeons as I felt I spent more time there and became too familiar with the same action packed guitar riffs in nearly every song. I will say, once you get to the last chapter you'll hear some amazing music that is definitely made to hype you up for the events near the end of the game. I did enjoy the music in the game I just wish there was more variety in each dungeons theme. When it comes to Voice actors and actresses you have an amazing line up for Japanese voice talents. Anime fans will likely recognize some of the voice talents. I must say that its very cool to hear Taiwan voice talents also do a great job representing the characters. All the voice lines are great quality and the characters personalities are captured by the talents representing their respective characters. Sound effects, weapon effects, damage and all sounds related all sound appropriate and do what they need to for what they are. I did notice that the background music at times would randomly stutter while in the over world more so than in the dungeons but nothing to stop me from enjoying the game.

The Story

You play as Yang Yumo, a normal highschool student living in Ximending. That is until you are attacked by a Chaos Beast but luckily saved by your first guardian, Leo. Your powers are awakened and you soon after learn about a alternate dimension that is almost a replica of Ximending called Youshanding. As time goes on, the energy of the different dimensions converges, resulting in an appearance of an unstable dimensional rift. This unpredictable rift became one of the possibilities for the alternate dimension of Youshanding and the real world location Ximending to connect and to travel to the Kunlun, home of Leo and the other guardians. It is up to you, Leo and the other guardians to stop the phantoms of Youshanding from breaking through the unstable dimensional rifts.

Final Notes/My Opinion

Dusk Divers plot was confusing to follow initially but the further in you get the more sense it will make. Some of the missions near the end of the game make you wonder what the hell is happening or question where to go, but these moments are very far and few thankfully. The English translation is a bit spotty with some errors that need to be reworded but the story isn't lost in translation so you should be able to understand what they were going for. While I did encounter some glitches and bugs in the game that were very tedious such as doing any type of movements at the end of a dungeon causing my game to become non-responsive/crash. I did still enjoy the game, just make sure you save after every dungeon just to be safe. If you are looking for a easy to pickup Beat'em up with some pretty generic but likable trope characters and a solid story I highly recommend this one.
